Every child in the USA, by law will be put into a convertible car seat of some type when riding in a car. This is the seat that infants normally graduate into after outgrowing their infant car seats. There are many makes and models all providing various safety features.

By Definition, a convertible car seat is a car seat that can hold a rear facing infant and a forward facing toddler or older child. Most convertible car seats support a newborn as small as 5 pounds and hold a child up to at least 40 pounds, some as far as 80 pounds! They are always fixed inside your car, unlike an infant car seat where it can be removed easily off of a base and carried around with the baby inside.

Many customers do not realize the benefits of a convertible car seat, especially those that support a child through 80 pounds. The key benefit of a convertible car seat is the five point harness restraint system. There are convertible car seats on the market with a three point restraint system, but they would not be recommended by myself nor most leading car seat safety experts. The five point harness restraint keeps your child much safer in the instance of an accident compared to a booster seat with a lap and shoulder belt or a three point harness system. Simply put, the child is restrained in five points versus three and positioned more correctly and securely within the seat. Keeping your child restrained in this way as long as you can will offer your child the most protection inside moving vehicle.
