Ceramic Fridge Magnet These simple to make magnets are sure to be a hit around your kitchen! The 2" X 2" ceramic tiles are available in your home improvement store. If you by them by the sheet (12" X 12") you'll get 36 tiles for a few dollars - enough to make magnets for your family and friends! Use white tiles with clear or white waterslip decals, almond tiles with clear decals. You can also use other light colored tiles with the clear decals, but keep in mind that any white in your design will print out blank and take on the color of the tile. MATERIALS NEEDED 2" X 2" Ceramic tiles Waterslip decals and finishing spray Magnetic circles, tape or sheets INSTRUCTIONS 1) Open a blank page in your graphics software and put a square on the page that measures 2" by 2" (or a tiny bit smaller). Leave the square with no fill and make the outline a light grey so that you have very faint guidelines to go by when you cut out your design. 2) Place your design - photo, clipart, etc. - inside the square so that it fits without any part of the design hitting your guidelines. 3) Print a test page on plain paper. Cut it out just inside the guidelines and place it on the tile to make sure it will fit. 4) Once you have the correct size, you can print the design on your waterslip decal. Do NOT cut it out yet! 5) Prepare the decal with the finishing spray - 2 or 3 light coats in a well- ventilated area. Allow each coat to dry for about an hour. 6) Cut out your design. Make certain that the surface of the tile is clean before you soak your decal and apply it to the tile. Remember to slide the backing from behind the decal, not the other way around! (If you're new to waterslip decals, see our project on Display Plates for more complete instructions on their use.) 7) Once you have your design where you want it on the tile, GENTLY blot the decal with a soft tissue or paper towel to work out any bubbles or wrinkles. Allow to dry flat for a few hours. 8) Apply magnetic circles or pieces of magnetic tape or sheeting on the back of the magnet and you're good to go!
