More W.Va. voters say machines are switching votes
In six cases, Democratic votes flipped to GOP

WINFIELD, W.Va. -- Three Putnam County voters say electronic voting machines changed their votes from Democrats to Republicans when they cast early ballots last week.

This is the second West Virginia county where voters have reported this problem. Last week, three voters in Jackson County told The Charleston Gazette their electronic vote for "Barack Obama" kept flipping to "John McCain".

In both counties, Republicans are responsible for overseeing elections. Both county clerks said the problem is isolated.

They also blamed voters for not being more careful.

"People make mistakes more than machines," said Jackson County Clerk Jeff Waybright.

Shelba Ketchum, a 69-year-old nurse retired from Thomas Memorial Hospital, described what happened Friday at the Putnam County Courthouse in Winfield.

"I pushed buttons and they all came up Republican," she said. "I hit Obama and it switched to McCain. I am really concerned about that. If McCain wins, there was something wrong with the machines.

"I asked them for a printout of my votes," Ketchum said. "But they said it was in the machine and I could not get it. I did not feel right when I left the courthouse. My son felt the same way.

"I heard from some other people they also had trouble. But no one in there knew how to fix it," said Ketchum, who is not related to Menis Ketchum, a Democratic Supreme Court candidate.

Ketchum's son, Chris, said he had the same problem. And Bobbi Oates of Scott Depot said her vote for incumbent Democratic Sen. John D. Rockefeller was switched to GOP opponent Jay Wolfe.

"I touched the one I wanted, Rockefeller, and the machine put a checkmark on the Republican instead," Oates said of her experience Thursday.

She said she caught the mistake, called over a worker in the county clerk's office and was able to correct her vote. But she worries other voters may not catch such a mistake.

When asked if she is sure she touched the box for Rockefeller, she said, "I'm absolutely positive."

Putnam County Clerk Brian Wood said on Saturday that he is upset there are "so many negative stories out there and not enough positive ones. We want people to vote. People need to know the facts.

"But we haven't had any major issues. We try to explain to voters how the machines work then they come in," Wood said.

In Putnam County, early voters have the option of asking for either touch-screen machines or optical scan ballots -- paper ballots on which people mark in their election choices.

Wood said some voters might not realize that touch-screen voting machines may take a few seconds to record their choices.

I am currently in Iraq. I just left Baghdad and am located at Belarus, Iraq near the Iraqi and Iranian boarder. I have been in Iraq for the last 5 years since 2003. I have never missed a general election. I was home on R&R Sept 1-25th. As always I went to the Kanawha County Voter Registration office in the Court House Annex. I asked if I could vote in the General Election since I was going to be in Iraq on Election Day. I was told that I was too early for pre-election voting and that I could request an absentee voter ballet sent to my APO address in Iraq. I filled out the form and eagerly went back to Iraq. I have been waiting for my Absentee Ballet ever since. Last week I did receive a letter from the County Clerks office with my “New” but not requested “Voter Registration Card” sent to my APO address in Baghdad, Iraq. In short instead of sending me an Absentee Ballet I was sent a “Voters Registration Card” For the first time in my voting history I will miss placing my vote for President. John McCain has my

It amazes me that the opposition can take three words out of a 5 minute and 46 second conversation that Senator Obama had with Joe the Plumber and twist the three words so far out of context that it's ridiculous, just so they can use the three words to label him a socialist.

If folks would take the time to find and listen to the conversation in its entirety, they may have a different outlook on the "spread the wealth," mantra they're hearing from McCain and Palin and the talking head pundits.

Obama treated Joe with the utmost respect, and took the time to explain exactly how his tax plan would work. He even had the graciousness to tell Joe, that even if he didn't vote for him, he would still work hard for him and others in the same financial and tax brackets.

I have to give Obama credit for the time he spent with Joe. Most politicians would have walked away at the mere hint that a citizen was about to confront him in disagreement.

If it's the voters' fault, why is it ONLY switching a Dem to a GOP vote (Obama to McCain) and not also vice versa? They are LIARS!
Looks like W. VA. got Florida's old cast-off touch screen machines because they had the same problem in 2004 and it was NOT an accidnet or voter error. The vote flipping software was written by a man named Clint Curtis at the urging of Fl Speaker of the House (R) Tom Feeney who commissioned Yang Enterprises Inc of Orlando to write the code for it. It's all on bradblog. com. Go read it for yourself. McCain is trying to STEAL this election just like Bush did. GOP can't win, so they cheat. We have tons of poll wtachers now in FL so they are going to work their scheme in other states this time. Don't accept the Clerk's excuses! Complain LONG & LOUD to your County and State Reps, call every paper and media outlet in the local area. Protest outside the polling places if you must but DO NOT let them steal your vote like they stole Florida's!

Its really sad the only way the Republicans can win the election is by stealing it. If they were really wanted McCain in office, I'm sure people would vote for him.
