IV Vitamin C Used to Recover Terminal Swine Flu Case
Posted by: Dr. Mercola

swine flu, vitamin C, intravenous vitamin C, intravenous, infectionDr. Thomas Levy sent me a case report where vitamin C was used to completely cure a case of swine flu. He says that adequately dosed vitamin C, to his knowledge, has never failed to cure an acute viral syndrome.

According to information he received from a colleague in New Zealand, John Appleton, the following occurred:

A Waikato farmer went to Fiji for a holiday and started developing flu-like symptoms, but decided to tough it out. He arrived back in New Zealand very sick with swine flu.

Tauranga Hospital was not able to treat him (what was not known at the time is that he has leukemia -- he didn't know either.) They sent him to Auckland Hospital, but he continued to deteriorate, despite the use of Tamiflu and antibiotics.

His brother-in-law (who knows a bit about vitamin C) contacted Dr. Thomas Levy in the U.S., who referred him to  John Appleton.

John Appleton provided a lot of information on vitamin C and referred the family to CAM (Centre for Advanced Medicine), www.camltd.co.nz in Auckland. The family pushed to get him some IV vitamin C, but the hospital refused. CAM doctors encouraged the hospital to try vitamin C.

The patient deteriorated further and was on life support. The family was told nothing more could be done and life support would be switched off. His lungs were not functioning. The family said NO -- not until everything has been tried.

The hospital was pushed hard to give him IVC and reluctantly agreed, saying if there was no improvement by Friday, that's it.

The patient showed signs of improvement by Wednesday, to the hospital’s surprise.

Concerns were expressed about his kidneys, and a new specialist wanted to stop the vitamin C use -- the family was told his liver was failing, “caused by vitamin C”.

John Appleton gave them data showing the liver is more likely to be affected by antibiotics.

Patient recovery continued to the point where he could be transferred to Waikato (closer to home). He was still on a ventilator and NG tube feeding. The doctors there were more receptive to vitamin C, but wouldn't agree to continue the treatment.

The family got a high profile lawyer involved who wrote a letter about patient rights and called the hospital to recommend that they sort it out with the family.

As a result, the hospital continued with IVC, albeit at a much lower dose. A CAM doctor traveled to Waikato to endorse the treatment and recommend IVC at higher doses. The patient continued to recover -- he was now conscious.

The hospital staff was stunned -- they had never seen anything like this.

The patient was told by his brother-in-law that IVC had saved him. The patient’s wife had not lost her husband and the children have their father. The patient was by this time fully 'with it' and talking normally with family and taking Lypospheric vitamin C (6 grams daily).

For those doctors wondering about doses, Dr. Levy communicated directly with the brother-in-law to find out.

  • On the Tuesday following the initial "deadline," 25 grams were given intravenously.
  • On Wednesday, 25 gram infusions were again repeated twice.
  • Thursday the patient received 75 grams.
  • Starting on Friday he received 100 grams intravenously and stayed at this dose daily for another 4 to 6 days.

Then the new consultant had the vitamin C discontinued completely.

One week later, the IVC was restarted at only one gram twice daily.

Dr. Levy encourages everyone to resend this case history to any and all who you think could benefit, including your friends and contacts in the government.

Obviously, a reasonable daily dose of vitamin C could be expected to do an even better job at preventing H1N1 while having no downside relative to the mass vaccinations getting ready to take place.

Dr. Mercola's Comments:
Dr. Mercola's Live in Chicago

Dr. Thomas E. Levy, M.D., J.D, is the author of several books, including Curing the Incurable: Vitamin C, Infectious Diseases, and Toxins, and Stop America's #1 Killer, a book about vitamin deficiency and heart disease. He’s also written extensively on topics such as dental toxicity issues from mercury amalgams and root canals, vaccine safety, and the clinical uses of vitamin C for infectious diseases.

I’m very pleased to share this case report I recently received from him, where a patient fully recovered from a near-lethal case of the swine flu, using intravenous vitamin C.

The report also illustrates just how difficult it may be to get a conventional hospital to concede to such measures. Fortunately, this man’s family was both resourceful and insistent.

Vitamin C and Infectious Disease

In one of his articles, Dr. Levy describes the mechanics of vitamin C, and how it works to treat infectious diseases such as the flu.

According to Dr. Albert Szent-Gyorgyi (who won the Nobel Prize in 1937 for his discovery of vitamin C), “health” occurs when there is an ample flow and interchange of electrons in your cells. Impaired or poor electron flow and interchange equals “disease,” and when the flow and interchange ceases entirely, your cells die.

Oxidation, caused by free radicals in your body, involves the loss of electrons.

Antioxidants counters the disease process caused by oxidation (loss of electrons) by supplying electrons.

Vitamin C is a major antioxidant, and according to Dr. Levy, perhaps the most important “electron donor” to maintain optimal electron flow in your cells.

Using vitamin C to combat infectious diseases is not new, yet conventional medicine can be quite resistant to the idea, as this case report shows. Even when the man was on his death bed the hospital was still unwilling to give him intravenous vitamin C, despite the fact they had absolutely nothing left in their own toolkit!

In 2005, the Orthomolecular Medicine News Service (a non-profit and non-commercial informational resource), published findings that vitamin C beats bird flu and other viruses:

“High dose vitamin C is a remarkably safe and effective treatment for viral infections. In high doses, vitamin C neutralizes free radicals, helps kill viruses, and strengthens your body's immune system.

Taking supplemental vitamin C routinely helps prevent viral infections.

The Avian Flu (or Bird Flu), so often mentioned by newspapers, magazines and other news sources, is a particularly severe form of influenza. It should probably be called Poultry Flu, since almost all of the 150 or so human infections have come from domestic poultry.

Interestingly, the symptoms of avian flu include hemorrhages under the skin, and bleeding from the nose and gums. These are also classical symptoms of clinical scurvy, which means a critical vitamin C deficiency is present. This means that vitamin C (ascorbate) is needed to treat it.

Severe cases may require 200,000 to 300,000 milligrams of vitamin C or more, given intravenously (IV) by a physician.

This very high dosing may be needed since the Avian Flu appears to consume vitamin C very rapidly, similar to an acute viral hemorrhagic fever, somewhat like an Ebola infection.”

They even stated that vitamin C, at saturation, can replace antiviral drugs.

Here are three other sources discussing the remarkable benefits of vitamin C for infectious diseases such as the flu:

  1. Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, 1999 found that vitamin C in megadoses administered before or after the appearance of cold and flu symptoms relieved and prevented the symptoms in the test population compared with the control group.

  2. The Clinical Experiences of Frederick R. Klenner, MD states that cases of influenza, encephalitis, and measles were easily cured with vitamin C injections and oral doses.

  3. Orthomed.com – Dr. Robert Cathcart, MD, also offers personal case studies where intravenous administration of vitamin C turned out to be lifesaving in cases of acute flu complications.

“It is not really a matter of medicine; it is a matter of chemistry. Doses of ascorbate which are massive enough to force a reducing redox potential into tissues affected by the disease will always neutralize the free radicals,” he says.

Alternatives to Dangerous and Poorly Tested Flu Vaccines

It’s nice to know there are at least two viable alternatives to conventional flu treatments, especially now that governments and health officials everywhere are gearing up to inoculate as many as possible with the experimental swine flu vaccine.

And, we already know that the most often used flu drug Tamiflu comes with a laundry list of potential dangers, from blackouts to brain infections, to neuropsychiatric events, and death.

The other alternative, of course, is vitamin D, which I have already mentioned in previous articles.

Although the studies proving vitamin D’s protective powers against the flu do not include the swine flu virus specifically (it’s too new), it’s likely that vitamin D can offer protection against swine flu as well.

Flu viruses mutate each year, yet people with sufficient vitamin D levels appear more or less immune to the seasonal flu without regard for which strain is currently in circulation.

There is so much compelling evidence, that I believe keeping your vitamin D levels optimized year-round is one of the absolute best strategies for avoiding infections of ALL kinds, and vitamin D deficiency is likely the TRUE culprit behind the seasonal flu -- not the flu virus itself.

If you are coming down with flu-like symptoms and have not been on vitamin D you can take doses of 50,000 units a day for three days to treat the acute infection. Some researchers like Dr. Cannell believe the dose could even be as high as 1,000 units per pound of body weight for three days.

That said, there’s always the possibility that if you’ve never been exposed to the antigens, there is a chance that the vitamin D might not work, even in these megadoses.

Ultimately, your best bet is to maintain healthy levels of vitamin D around 60 ng/ml year-round. For more in-depth information about test values, recommended labs, and the treatment of vitamin D deficiency, please review this previous article.

To find out even more important information about vitamin D, I strongly recommend you watch my one-hour free vitamin D lecture along with my video on vitamin D’s role in flu prevention.

A Word of Caution about Vitamin C Supplements

It’s important to remember that every nutrient you ingest raises or lowers up to nine other nutrients in your body.

Every nutrient needs certain synergistic nutrients, and if you are already low in those synergistic nutrients, taking more of one thing will only further deplete the existing deficient levels, worsening any problems relating to that nutrient’s metabolism.

For example, taking large doses of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) on a regular basis lowers your level of copper, so if you are already deficient in copper and take high doses of vitamin C, you can compromise your immune system.

So, whereas temporarily taking megadoses of vitamin C supplements to combat a case of the cold or flu is likely not going to cause a problem, for long-term, daily use, your best bet is to eat an diet that is full of high quality organic vegetables and fruits that are minimally processed. Not only will you get vitamin C, but you will get all the other accessory nutrients and micronutrients that are needed to optimize it.

In 1948, a North Carolina physician, Dr. Klenner in his efforts to treat children infected with poilo, found that high doasage vitamin C therapy was highly effective and almost universally successful in treating this disease. As described in the above post, it is also effective against MANY viral syndromes. A Dr. Cathcart enhanced Dr. Klenner's work and simplified these therapies so that lower and oral doages could be used. This survey article from the Journal of Orthomolecular Medicine is very informative www.seanet.com/.../landwehr-r-j_orthomol_med-1991-v6-n2-p99.htm  The key thing to understand is not only the resistance of the Allopathic community (aka CULT) to these cheap and effective therapies, but also that the Medical-Pharmaceutical cartel, using trade law such as Codex is determined to remove Vitamin supplements from the market so that you will not even be able to get these therpaies over the counter. Have no doubt about this, the profit motive is at work here, not any interest in your health or well being and certainly not your health freedom.

NB: "...he continued to deteriorate, DESPITE the use of Tamiflu and antibiotics." The deterioration was probably because of the drugs, laid on top of the double whammy of infection added to an unrecognized underlying disease (leukemia) -- which in turn is related to antioxidant deficiency.

Great that the hospital staff got their eyes opened at least temporarily. Wonder how many will go into denial and explain this away? Any bets they keep denying this to other patients? Good for the family to have put up a fight. Everyone family should throw lawsuits at doctors who won't use natural therapies, long before the patient is at death's door.

In a national single-payer system you'd think people would want to get a patient out of expensive ICU as soon as possible. Natural therapies which help do that is simple logic. But Canada's official medical system is gung-ho for Tamiflu and vaccines, and the compliant media is keeping up the selling job despite adverse reports, e.g. "Unpublished studies question whether seasonal flu shot raises swine flu risk", by medical reporter Helen Branswell. (Canadian Press story)

When I heard this on radio, I imagined panic ensuing among "vaccinologists":

"Officials are scrambling to contain the outbreak of truth on the airwaves. Because this hit fast from an unexpected quarter (an unpublished report), the issue has been boosted from level 5 to level 6 in pandemic preparedness. New vaccines of disinformation larded with poisonous adjuvants of overblown concern for public health are being rushed to news markets without prior testing."

Dr. Jonathan Wright explained in one of his newsletters (last year?) that antioxidants were demonstrated in some comparative studies to reduce ICU time for trauma patients and to improve outcomes. As part of a finance committee he tried to convince the hospital to adopt this as a cost-saving measure, but it was turned down "for medical reasons".

scintilla1 -- Regarding "throwing lawsuits at doctors" -- That is so much more easily said than done.

I don't know what the requirements to sue a doctor are in your area, but in the US another doctor must certify that mal-practice took place.

Not easy to get another doctor to do that.

I had surgery, which the doctor talked me into, and had a horrible outcome. -- When I talked to an attorney about it, he said: "That is a 'known consequence' of that surgery, so it would be hard to prove that it was mal-practice".

It wasn't "known" to me, but evidently that doesn't matter.

Doctors are "important people" in the community. "We" evidently are not.

It's so sad that almost every real change in the medical world comes about only after many lives are lost and ruined. I heard someone say that doctors and the medical establishment take to change like a hippopotamus putting on a girdle.

That's why it's so important what Dr. Mercola and many others are doing - educating the world. Without correct information, it's very difficult to make informed decisions. Look at how important it was for that man's life that his brother had heard about Dr. Levy.

If you want to watch a very revealing video about vitamin c given by Dr. Levy, yo can here: http://ow.ly/qRmF

Vitamin c treatment is very powerful indeed, as are many other natural treatments. The more one learns, the better choices you are able to make for yourself and your loved ones.

Trinity Wellness:

Check out the studies by researcher Dr. Linus Pauling.  Dr. Pauling was the recipient of much ridicule once his findings on the effects of Vitamin C were published.  Even today many try to label Dr. Pauling's discoveries as pure Quackery.  I guess this is why the WHO has restricted the amount of Vitamin C shipped to The African Continent. According to Dr. Pauling, Vitamin C properly administered, will kill any virus.

You mention Dr Cathcart, and so does Dr. Levy in a presentation he made to the Cancer convention. It seems that this site doesn't allow links, so if you are interested go to Youtube, and search for Dr. Levy. There are 4 videos in this series, and @ 4:25 in the third video Dr. Levy states that 5 grams of Lypo-Spheric Vitamin C is "clinically more effective than 50 grams of IV "C", and yet he doesn't mention it in the above article.

Very strange.

Another great use for vitamin c is to detoxify from anesthesia AFTER surgery. The drug can stay in your system for up to a year otherwise, affecting memory and fatigue.

For the same reason, avoid vitamin c for a day or two prior to surgery to avoid a paralyzed state of awakening. The "c" can detoxify the anesthesia which can result in feeling the surgery but being paralyzed and unable to communicate the horrific situation.

Finally some information about vitamin C on this site! This story hardly surprises me since doctors like Robert Cathcart and Linus Pauling have been SHOUTING it for decades to a deaf medical community. By the way, the vitamin C does not have to be intravenous and in most cases will only be used that way when high dose vitamin C makes it easier. Here is a link to Robert Cathcart's discussion of how to use it the same way orally. It's a good read and is very comprehensive with a good chart on what general amounts to use and in what doses and how to judge the dose by "bowel tolerance". www.orthomed.com/titrate.htm

A couple of things: 1. If taking high doses of vitamin C, do NOT use "Ester C" - it's calcium ascorbate and will give you an unhealthy dose of calcium. Even if you're taking just 5000 mg. a day of ester C, the calcium dose you're getting can be considered to be high. Robert Cathcart and Linus Pauling failed to mention that they were using sodium ascorbate for their IV use as well as oral use. Sodium ascorbate is a buffered form of vitamin C because of the salt. The salt is NOT table salt which is sodium chloride, which is the culprit for hypertension and all the negative associations with salt. Sodium ascorbate will generally not produce any of those problems. Sodium ascorbate is the safest, best buffered version of vitamin C you can take.

2. Kidney stones. Robert Cathcart maintains that in most people, high dose sodium ascorbate actually prevents kidney stones. While he says there may be some people who can develop kidney stones, sufficient intake of water should help prevent this.

3. High dose C above 10 grams a day for any extended time has the ability to leech all minerals from your body, not just copper. So a comprehensive mineral supplement is recommended if taking large amounts of C.

I have to add to my post to say also that taking high amounts of vitamin C for a few days to battle a cold or flu or anything like that is great and effective, but one thing is important to remember and this also applies for IV vitamin C use: you can't just take high amounts and suddenly stop. Cathcart will talk about this on his site. Even if you're taking as low as 8 grams a day, which I do, you can't just stop overnight. Well of course you can, and I've done it, but it's not a good idea. On any high dose of vitamin C, if you want to go back down or stop altogether, do it a little gradually, as otherwise, it shocks your body and can actually leave you open to infection for a few days.

What about eating garlic??!  A very few years ago (3-4) my husband, Bill, had an upper respiratory chest cold.  Wasn`t getting over it to well.  He knew at that time that garlic would help him, but, was fairly sick at the time to get into it.  I thought, "Well, I won`t sit and do nothing!  I will feed him garlic whether he wants it or not--end of subject!!"  At noon hour, I cut up a large amont of garlic, fried it up for his noon hour meal, of course he ate it wanted to or not, and by supper time of the same day, he noticed he did start feeling better.  The next day, much improved.  By 3 days later, the upper respiratory chest cold was absolutely gone.    No going to see Dr. Quack at all.  Organic garlic did the trick.  I am not saying Vitamin C is not good, yes it is---great stuff---but, please do not knock what is in garlic, especially organically grown garlic.  And so are Melaleuca Vitamins, especially an immune formula called Acitivate.

I also use sodium ascorbate (Nature's Way The Right C 500 mg caps). It might be made from GM corn, but I still use it for now. Natural C products are just too expensive for therapeutic use. Nature's Way also has cal/mag ascorbate 500 mg caps with only 4 mg calcium and 4 mg magnesium, although I prefer sodium ascorbate.

Before retiring, I worked for a nutriceutical company for several years that has the largest selling vitamin C product in the US. The company founder worked with Pauling, Stone, Gyorgyi and Hoffer to develop a C that could be given in high doses without the high acidity of ascorbic acid alone. Ascorbic acid is not C, the mineral ascorbates are, but you need all eight of them in balance. Not just sodium alone.

No doubt a person with undiagnosed chronic scurvy (which is what a lot of illness is) will respond favorably to the addition of any of the ascorbates, but for maximal results I would certainly not depend solely on sodium ascorbate. Calcium and sodium ascorbate are only 1/4 of the ascorbate complex that makes up vitamin C. There is also magnesium, potassium, zinc, manganese, chromium... and I can't remember the 8th one, but it is important, too.

The downside to mineral ascorbates is that, with the exception of calcium, magnesium and sodium, the others degrade quickly. So quickly that they cannot be packaged for marketing.

Recognizing the problem, it was determined that all of the necessary minerals, in natural body ratios to one another, must be reacted and immediately consumed. This was done by combining the 8 minerals, in carbonate form, with ascorbic acid and some natural fruit flavor, packed as powder in individual one dose hermetically sealed packets. When water is added to the packet contents in a glass the acid reacts with the mineral carbonates and, Voila! a glass of true vitamin C is created for immediate consumption.

The company is Alacer. The product is Emergen-C. The creator of the product is probably one of the great unsung heros of Vitamin C research. His name is Jay Patrick. He passed away at the age of 92 and ran the company every day until about a week before his demise. He had to be dragged to the hospital. His diet was deplorable and he got no exercise. I attribute his longevity to his massive consumption of his own invention.

Prosilver: The other mineral ascorbates are simply not to be taken at high doses as they all could produce very severe problems very quickly. For a daily supplement at a normal dosage, that product sounds fine. But for use in IV or high oral doses, the only really safe ones are sodium ascorbate or pure ascorbate, and I again leave calcium ascorbate out of the safe ones for high doses. All of Cathcart's and Pauling's research was done with sodium ascorbate. As I say, multi-mineral ascrobates for smaller daily doses is probably better than anything but are dangerous to use for the purpose of this thread.

The second best is to have pure ascorbic acid (vitamin C) powder stored in the house. Be sure to buy high quality powder with pharmaceutical grade purity from the German manufacturers.  A vitamin C flush is done by taking 4-5 grams diluted in water every 20-30 minutes until bowel tolerance (when you will start having diarrhea as s signal that the body is saturated). Then wait for a couple of hours and continue. The tolerance level is dependent on how much the body needs, if you have a severe viral infection it might be 10-20 times higher than normal.

The powder is very sour and it would be a good idea to try it beforehand to get used to it. (Dr Levy recommends against buffered ascorbic acid).  When I have the flu I usually take 50-200 grams over a few days. Also keep a large bag of Brazil nuts, it is the best way to get selenium naturally if you catch the flu.

Dr. Levy’s book is excellent and shows how all viral infections (including Ebola) can be cured with IV vitamin C. I believe that there will be an extreme controversy around this and that the medical establishment will go to any length to suppress and ban this method. It is unfortunate that Levy’s book is self-published. Wikipedia use that as an excuse to ban this source as being “unreliable” even though all his claims are referenced from medical journals. Many public libraries would reject the book for the same reason.

Sorry, I forgot to finish my post. This may be another good reason to avoid the hospital if at all possible! That's my opinion, anyway, though I do realize there are probably times when going to the hospital could be a wise decision.

Actually, synthetic vitamin C and naturally derived vitamin C are chemically identical and there's no difference between the bioavailability of either one of them. Some, but not all, natural vitamin Cs have the bioflavanoids with them, which is actually great. My main concern is that a lot of vitamin C is manufactured from corn. Corn, as anyone on this site will know, is not a really desirable food to eat for a few reasons, it being possibly and probably GMO is one of them. I've gone out of my way to find sodium ascorbate not made from corn, or tested to have no corn residue.

But it's more important to take certain vitamins that are naturally derived than it is with other vitamins. Vitamin C is not one of the important ones, unless you're thinking of the bioflavanoids, which I'd say is a good thing to have, however even then, I make sure I actually eat citrus fruit sometimes for that, AND I juice lemon peels to not waste them, AND because they're FULL of bioflavanoids - plus they give vegetable juice a little zip.

I would always make sure to get vitamin C POWDER to avoid the binders and fillers in tablets. Plus powder is so much more economical and easier to take.

Beht: You mention taking high amounts of vitamin C for a few days to battle a cold or flu - How much would that be and is it taken all at once or over a few doses?

Also, is it best to start with a lower intake then increase? Thank you.
