Now health and safety killjoys ban reindeer from Christmas display... because it might snow

As natives of the Arctic Circle, reindeer are pretty used to trotting about in wintry weather.

So you might not have thought a market town in the East Midlands would pose much of a problem for them.

But health and safety officers had other ideas after 12 were booked to entertain shoppers in Market Harborough.

Reindeer

Reindeer similar to these from the Real Reindeer company were banned from the Christmas display

They banned the animals from parading round the town square after ruling it was too dangerous --because it might snow.

Officials put up posters saying: 'There is a risk of slips and falls to attendees at the event, when the conditions get worse.'

The sudden cancellation only three hours before the reindeer were due to arrive in the Leicestershire town for the council-organised event left shopkeepers fuming.

Market square

Hundreds of shoppers planning to gather in the The Square in Market Harborough were left disappointed after the reindeer display was deemed too risky

Malcolm Lever-Jones, independent traders' spokesman, said: 'It is health and safety gone barmy and completely ruined the festive mood.

'Hundreds of people had come from up to 40 miles away and were dreadfully disappointed.

'The council said there was a risk of snow and ice to pedestrians but with or without the reindeer the streets were still icy. None of the town centre was cordoned off. It just made no sense.'

He estimated the cost to the taxpayer of cancelling Friday's event at around £10,000.

A Harborough Council spokesman said: 'Obviously, the reindeer would have loved the snow. But sadly we decided to cancel because of the possible danger to people, including young children.'

Health & Safety Gone Mad...beaurocratic jobsworths with no common sense. They are paid by us having been given made up jobs by the Government to keep more supporters "on side" and their sole purpose seems to be to mess everyone's lives up. Make them pay the £10,000 and see how many more get cancelled!
I'd sue them and the Government for being total idiots with not a brain cell between them. WE can look after ourselves H&S, we do not need you dictating what we can and can't do, because we do understand, contrary to official opinion, we are past 12 years of age and we have a brain and can use it even in difficult situations!!! You are a bunch of kill joys who get paid enormous sums of money, for what? We used to have fun, yes fun, and any damage was laughed off or sorted, but we would NEVER EVER do anything to harm anyone, least of all our own children.

H&SAW Act ws brought in to curb dangerous practises in the work place. Extremely laudable - especially in the construction and other highly dangerous industries in or around 1974. It has evolved into an all pervading blight on our society because of the legal profession. In the Sates they (Lawyers) used to be called "Ambulance Chasers".
Apart from that, the other main concern that lawyers have embraced - along with like minded liberals - is that of PC!
What happened to common sense?
Who both teaches AND employs the people who INTERPRET the law?

Judges beware. Anarchy is brewing if the establishment does not understand the frusration. Your employers are ultimately the people who accept your position - US - but your management of this is fundamentally abysmal.

In live in Market Harborough and we are continually being asked to support our local shops etc, but as you can see in one foul swoop the H & S morons can stop an event that would have perhaps encouraged people to go into the town.
