New Study of Splenda Reveals Shocking Information About Potential Harmful Effects

splenda, sucralose, artificial sweetenersJames Turner, the chairman of the national consumer education group Citizens for Health, has expressed shock and outrage after reading a new report from scientists outlining the dangers of the artificial sweetener Splenda (sucralose).

In animals examined for the study, Splenda reduced the amount of good bacteria in the intestines by 50 percent, increased the pH level in the intestines, contributed to increases in body weight and affected P-glycoprotein (P-gp) levels in such a way that crucial health-related drugs could be rejected.

The P-gp effect could result in medications used in chemotherapy, AIDS treatment and treatments for heart conditions being shunted back into the intestines, rather than being absorbed by the body.

According to Turner, "The report makes it clear that the artificial sweetener Splenda and its key component sucralose pose a threat to the people who consume the product. Hundreds of consumers have complained to us about side effects from using Splenda and this study ... confirms that the chemicals in the little yellow package should carry a big red warning label."

Dr. Mercola''s Comments Dr. Mercola's Comments:

It’s very important to realize that Splenda (sucralose) is actually NOT sugar, despite its marketing slogan “Made from sugar, so it tastes like sugar”. Rather it’s a chlorinated artificial sweetener in line with aspartame and saccharin, and with detrimental health effects to match.

Splenda was approved by the FDA in 1998 as a tabletop sweetener and for use in products such as baked goods, nonalcoholic beverages, chewing gum, frozen dairy desserts, fruit juices, and gelatins. Sucralose is also permitted as a general-purpose sweetener for all processed foods.

The approval was given after the FDA supposedly reviewed more than 110 animal and human safety studies, but as you’ll soon find out, out of these 110 studies, only two were human studies, and the longest one was conducted for four days!

There’s overwhelming evidence that consuming artificial sweeteners will likely wreak havoc on your body. Previous news has centered mainly around artificial sweeteners’ ability to impair your appetite regulation and leading to weight gain.

For example, it’s been discovered that diet soda increases your risk of metabolic syndrome and, ultimately, heart disease.

However, the study mentioned above, published in the Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health, found even further disturbing news besides weight gain. Splenda:

  • reduces the amount of good bacteria in your intestines by 50 percent
  • increases the pH level in your intestines, and
  • affects a glycoprotein in your body that can have crucial health effects, particularly if you’re on certain medications

They also found unmistakable evidence that Splenda is absorbed by fat, contrary to previous claims.

It’s truly disturbing that Splenda can destroy up to 50 percent of your healthy intestinal bacteria, as these bacteria help maintain your body's overall balance of friendly versus unfriendly micro-organisms, and support your general health. Many people are already deficient in healthy bacteria due to choosing highly processed foods. This is why a high quality probiotic is one of the very few supplements I highly recommend for nearly everyone.

The Diet Fallacy

The belief that consuming artificially sweetened foods and drinks will help you to lose or maintain weight is a carefully orchestrated deception. So if you are still opting for diet choices for this reason, please understand that you have been sorely misled.

In reality, these diet foods and drinks can cause serious distortions in your biochemistry and ruin your body's ability to control calories. As a matter of fact, it’s been shown that diet soft drinks can double your risk of obesity!

Nearly a decade ago, studies were already revealing that artificial sweeteners can:

  • Stimulate your appetite
  • Increase carbohydrate cravings
  • Stimulate fat storage and weight gain

Unfortunately, most public health agencies and nutritionists in the United States still recommend these toxic artificial sweeteners as an acceptable alternative to sugar.

Now, I am definitely not a fan of sugar, but if I had to choose between sugar and any artificial sweetener, I would choose sugar, hands down, without question. I strongly believe artificial sweeteners are even more dangerous to your health than an excess of sugar.

The Health Dangers of Splenda

According to James Turner, the chairman of the national consumer education group Citizens for Health:

"This report followed accepted policies and procedures and the results make clear the potential for disturbing side effects from the ingestion of Splenda.

It is like putting a pesticide in your body. And this is at levels of intake erroneously approved by the Food and Drug Administration.

A person eating two slices of cake and drinking two cups of coffee containing Splenda would ingest enough sucralose to affect the P-glycoprotein, while consuming just seven little Splenda packages reduces good bacteria."

The web site www.truthaboutsplenda.com lists a variety of consumer complaints from Splenda consumption, such as:

  • Gastrointestinal problems
  • Migraines
  • Seizures
  • Dizziness
  • Blurred vision
  • Allergic reactions
  • Blood sugar increases
  • Weight gain

My site also contains a long list of personal testimonials from readers who have suffered side effects from Splenda. In fact, we have more people on our site that have reported adverse reactions to Splenda than were formally studied in the research submitted for FDA approval!

The symptoms are so numerous I can’t include them all here, but the following are common symptoms, usually noticed within a 24-hour period following consumption of Splenda products:

  • Skin -- Redness, itching, swelling, blistering, weeping, crusting, rash, eruptions, or hives (itchy bumps or welts). These are the most common allergic symptoms that people have.
  • Lungs -- Wheezing, tightness, cough, or shortness of breath.
  • Head -- Swelling of the face, eyelids, lips, tongue, or throat; headaches and migraines (severe headaches).
  • Nose -- Stuffy nose, runny nose (clear, thin discharge), sneezing.
  • Eyes -- Red (bloodshot), itchy, swollen, or watery.
  • Stomach -- Bloating, gas, pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or bloody diarrhea.
  • Heart -- Palpitations or fluttering.
  • Joints -- Joint pains or aches.
  • Neurological -- Anxiety, dizziness, spaced-out sensation, depression.

Beware – You Could be Consuming Splenda Without Your Knowledge

You also need to be aware of the fact that although the bulk of Splenda is sold to processed food manufacturers and soft drink bottlers, it could turn up in your medicine as well, as nearly 10 percent of all sucralose is sold to drug companies.

Many times sucralose (Splenda) will not be listed in the drug information, so there simply is no way you would know you are consuming a potentially dangerous artificial sweetener. However, if you experience any of the symptoms above even though you’re avoiding Splenda and other artificial sweeteners, then it may be worth investigating the ingredients of any medications you’re taking as well.

Splenda Has NEVER Been Proven Safe for Human Consumption

As of 2006, only six human trials have been published on Splenda. Of these six trials, only two of the trials were completed and published before the FDA approved sucralose for human consumption, and the two published trials had a grand total of 36 total human subjects.

36 people sure doesn't sound like many, but wait, it gets worse: only 23 total were actually given sucralose for testing, and here is the real kicker -- The longest trial at this time had lasted only four days, and looked at sucralose in relation to tooth decay, not human tolerance.

Even more shocking, the absorption of Splenda into the human body was studied on a grand total of six men! Based on that one human study, the FDA allowed the findings to be generalized as being representative of the entire human population. Including women, children, the elderly, and those with any chronic illness -- none of whom were ever examined.

The FDA claims they reviewed over 100 studies conducted on Splenda. What they don't tell you is that most of the studies were on animals. And, those animal studies reveal plenty of problems, such as:

  • Decreased red blood cells -- sign of anemia -- at levels above 1,500 mg/kg/day
  • Increased male infertility by interfering with sperm production and vitality, as well as brain lesions at higher doses
  • Enlarged and calcified kidneys (McNeil stated this is often seen with poorly absorbed substances and was of no toxicological significance. The FDA Final Rule agreed that these are findings that are common in aged female rats and are not significant.)
  • Spontaneous abortions in nearly half the rabbit population given sucralose, compared to zero aborted pregnancies in the control group
  • A 23 percent death rate in rabbits, compared to a 6 percent death rate in the control group

Chemically, Splenda is More Similar to DDT Than Sugar

Yes. Splenda bears more chemical similarity to DDT than it does to sugar.

Sucralose is in fact a synthetic chemical that was originally cooked up in a laboratory. It does start off as a sugar molecule. Then, in a five-step patented process of making sucralose, three chlorine molecules are added to a sucrose (sugar) molecule. The chemical process to make sucralose alters the chemical composition of the sugar so much that it is somehow converted to a fructo-galactose molecule.

This type of sugar molecule does not occur in nature, and therefore your body does not possess the ability to properly metabolize it. As a result of this "unique" biochemical make-up, McNeil Nutritionals makes its claim that Splenda is not digested or metabolized by the body, hence it has zero calories.

But, if you look at the research (which is primarily extrapolated form animal studies) you will see that in fact an average of 15 percent of sucralose IS absorbed into your digestive system, and according to this latest study, it is also absorbed into your fat cells.

Unfortunately, if you are healthy and your digestive system works well, you may be at HIGHER risk for breaking down this product in your stomach and intestines!

Your Healthiest Alternatives

If you have a craving for sweets, rather than trying to find "healthier" ways to continue indulging in them, it is in your best interest to learn ways to relieve your cravings.

The obvious one would be to stop eating any of the products to begin with. But sweets are powerfully addictive – sugar has even been shown to be more addictive than cocaine. Stevia is a preferable natural substitute, which can be used in making most dishes and drinks.

However, complete avoidance of sweets is often necessary to break your addictive cycle, as your hormones insulin and leptin likely play an important role in your cravings.

If you are unable to achieve abstinence from sweets, your emotional connection to cravings might be an important factor for you. One of the most profound methods I know of for diminishing the effects of food cravings is the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT). EFT is the psychological acupressure technique routinely used in my practice to help people reduce their cravings.

There is enough evidence showing the dangers of consuming artificial sweeteners to fill an entire book -- which is exactly why I wrote Sweet Deception. If you or your loved ones drink diet beverages or eat diet foods, this book will explain how you've been deceived about the truth behind artificial sweeteners like aspartame and sucralose -- for greed, for profits ... and at the expense of your own health.

Without Dr. Mercola I might still be eating Splenda and thinking it wasn't bad for me! Artificial sweeteners, colors, and flavorings are hidden everywhere. I work in a dairy department, and it makes me sad when I see people buying the non-fat, non-"sugar" varieties and thinking it's good for them, when those have the worst stuff in them. I'm just 18 though, they probably assume I don't know anything about what we sell, but if they ever ask, I love to correct them...

Exactly how I feel on my shopping trips to the food stores. Trollys piled high with Junk Food and Drink. Should we be educating the children because I fear it might be too late for most of the parents

The food we put into our mouths is information to our bodies, cells and genes. Its quality determines the quality of our lives. The information of our food has been garbled on purpose by a handful of players. When we look around us the results of their genetically manipulated, toxic and sugar laden misshapen food fantasies are painfully clear. These people started out in the early 1900s (1902 General Education Board, 1910 Flexner Report) by destroying all holistically tuned medical schools. They replaced these with a thoroughly misleading, exclusively pharmaceutically based medical curriculum, coupling the lot with watchdog licensing boards and other measures to keep its graduates in check. This insane medical paradigm consistently has delivered doctors who unquestioningly promote life endangering vaccinations, while knowing virtually nothing about nutrition, and who will be severely chastised whenever they (try to) stray from the now globally entrenched, pharmaceutically oriented 'scientific' medical gospel. Add to that a food industry that has meticulously been corrupting the nutritional content of our food (genetic manipulation, toxic chemical additives), topped off with a Codex Alimentarius aimed at taking away any supplements that might neutralize the health undermining effects of all these detrimental food and medical approaches. And I am not even talking about replacing the natural vitamin and mineral compounds in these supplements with pharmaceutical look-alikes, rendering these products virtually useless anyway. I read in all this the culling of the useless eaters (read: you and me!). Don’t believe me. Check out the message chiseled out in eight languages in the granite of the Georgia Guide Stones: they want a world population of a permanent 500 million (non-)souls! And the kinkiest joke of it all is that in the process of making us sick and miserable on our quick way out of this world, they are making themselves filthy rich indeed!

Islander: Most of the earth’s problems are the direct result of overpopulation. Islander, are you part of this "overpopulation"? Perhaps you could be a good example to us all and take a long walk off a short pier and be the first to decrease this "overpopulation".

UrsulaMargrit, your accusations are as unjustified as your interpretations. “Maintain humanity under 500,000,000 in perpetual balance with nature” is a goal devoutly to be wished, and one that calls for responsible reproduction. Most of the earth’s problems are the direct result of overpopulation. To read that as “culling” is to put your own spin on the statement. I think you are pulling “one world government” out of #6, “Let all nations rule internally, resolving external disputes in a world court.” Think that through. Nations must settle internal disputes internally. External disputes should be settled, not by war, not by invasion, but in a court of international law. Pure reason, as I said.

Actually, Islander, I googled the Georgia Guidestones, and it very clearly talks about a one=world government and keeping the population under 500,000,000. Meaning, that Desiree is right, and you either don't know what you are talking about, or are in favour of one-world-government and population control. And of course, making people sick, and taking over the medical schools is a very effective way of population control, and of killing people.,Most products (including medication) have a 1-800 number on their label. You can call that, and ask them to tell you the ingredients. Often they have to call you back with the list, but they WILL tell you. Also, if you buy any drug from the pharmacy, you can ask the pharmacist to call for you. That is how I found out that Metamucil contains aspartame. My doctor told me to use Metamucil years ago, and I was going to buy the orange flavoured one. Realizing that it was obviously sweet, I checked the ingredient list to see what it was sweetened with, but it didn't say. So, I asked the pharmacist who called the company. He was very dismayed to find out it was aspartame, he had not known that. Needless to say, I didn't buy it, and have been telling others not to use it, either. Anyway, just call to find out. I have intolerances to many foods, especially gluten, and have called many times, and always got an answer

It is unfortunate that the pall of cultural paranoia has enveloped this monument, fostered with words like "occult" and "mystic." On the contrary, it is the exact opposite of mysticism — a monument to pure reason a la Thomas Paine. Allusions to world government, new world order and the like are the invention of panicky minds determined to see doom and gloom everywhere. Google the Georgia Guidestones and decide for yourself.

Several years ago I tried the Atkins Diet and he recommened Splenda. It only took a couple of months and I started having strange symptoms. My neck kept going out of place so I was seeing my chiriopractor frequently. Sometimes my neck would be out of place by the time I got home after an adjustment. THEN I noticed the nerves on one side of my face and up into my scalp began tingling. This grew progressively worse to the point it felt like hot electrical wires under my skin and crawling in my hair. About that time I saw an article online about some others who had severe reacitons to Splenda. I stopped using it immediately. The symptoms subsided and I felt back to normal within two weeks. I thank the Lord there was no permanent damage. That stuff is EVIL!!

Hi. I live in Puerto Rico where just one little grain of sugar left on the counter over night will have attracted a thousand ants by next morning trying to tow it to their nest. When my wife began using Splenda I was intrigued by the fact that the following morning after a spill from an envelope the night before, there never was ONE SINGLE INSECT IN SIGHT! Not one single ant! I guess they knew better, and I later found out why: the insectiicde ingredient used.

December 1965-- While working on an ulcer drug, James Schlatter, a chemist at G.D. Searle, accidentally discovers aspartame, a substance that is 180 times sweeter than sugar yet has no calories. Spring 1967-- Searle begins the safety tests on aspartame that are necessary for applying for FDA approval of food additives. Fall 1967-- Dr. Harold Waisman, a biochemist at the University of Wisconsin, conducts aspartame safety tests on infant monkeys on behalf of the Searle Company. Of the seven monkeys that were being fed aspartame mixed with milk, one dies and five others have grand mal seizures. Spring 1971-- Neuroscientist Dr. John Olney (whose pioneering work with monosodium glutamate was responsible for having it removed from baby foods) informs Searle that his studies show that aspartic acid (one of the ingredients of aspartame) caused holes in the brains of infant mice. One of Searle's own researchers confirmed Dr. Olney's findings in a similar study.

ha ha, finally I can post after years of reading comments... I can't figure out why anyone wants to eat organochlorines that in the environment are considered a very polluting substance, harmful to all forms of life. Splenda's marketing campaign, while unethical, must be one of the most successful to date. They sure must be proud, along with their investors. Most people that I talk to think I'm nuts and insist that it is "sugar". Chemicals, chemicals, will be our demise...

Like Patrick Henry, I "smelt a rat" (a Sprague-Dawley rat?) about Splenda about a year and three-quarters ago, when I changed my diet in accord with sound nutritional principles. Now whether you believe in evolution (as Dr. Mercola does) or in creation (as Jordan Rubin, George Malkmus, and a few other Christian diet mavens do), the conclusion is the same: artificial sweeteners cannot be part of a good diet. Either they haven't stood the test of time, or they are a prize example of "messing with the Work of the Master." That four conscientious scientists (at Duke University, no less) should finally demonstrate what Dr. Mercola and I have long suspected, doesn't surprise me in the slightest. The only thing that *does* suprise me is: *What took them so long?* In our household, we have a bunch of packets from opened boxes. Unless we hear anything against the Duke study in a month, we are going to destroy them. And in the meantime, we laid in a supply of stevia and know where to get more.

I used to use about 7-10 packets of Spenda daily, or more. One in my oatmeal, maybe 2, one in my coffee, several at lunch and dinner. Plus I drank diet sodas. I developed IBS, bladder problems, gained a lot of weight (even though I was "dieting") and had no idea what to do. I stopped ingesting all artificial sweetners, including sucralose or anything of that ilk. Quit using caffeine, and started on probiotics. Also, I quit eating most processed foods. I'm a lot better now and let go of 40 pounds. Also I did quit eating meat and dairy which helped. But I felt horrible using Splenda and think its really really bad.

After reading through some of these comments - I felt compelled to share what happened to my husband and I. We were invited over to dinner by a friend. I knew she was diet conscious, I did not assume however that she was ignorant. My husband is Type I diabetic. Unknowingly he ate Splenda in home made blueberry pie. Hours later he told me he felt really sick, like his blood glucose was 700 or 800. He tested it... it was completely normal. His body apparently did not know what to do with the non-sugar. In the morning - it seems his body figured out it was supposed to act like it was sugar - his blood glucose tested at 650. I could not figure out what happened. I had felt ill too but not being diabetic, I did even out. I thought about everything he ate, I called my friend... she says "Oh yeah, I cook with Splenda" - I wanted to wring her neck. I told her -You must tell people these things!!! My husband was ill for days. This was not the only time this happened, but - it was the defining moment in realizing what had happened. People think this stuff is more safe than what the Earth provides... I think they are insane. If you do not want to be obese - simply do not be a greedy glutton...

I have diabetes also and understand the difficulty in food choices outside my home. For that reason I seldom eat out, even at friends homes. As a Type 1 your husband does not produce any insulin on his own and therefore must inject it (or inhale it now) right? Did he plan on eating a fruit pie for desert? That choice surprises me even if it was made with sugar... Your friend is uneducated except by the commercials she sees in the media. If you attend a Diabetes Education course provided by your local hospital, taught by a Registered Dietician or Diabetes Educator you will learn all about the artificial sweeteners. They will recommend them. That is what they taught me, and I was in a large class of 100 or so people. You really have to do your homework to learn the truth. I hope you offered to explain the problem with Splenda, or better yet, referred her to this website.

My oldest sister, who passed away in August of 08, had metastatic breast cancer. She was also a diabetic. She used Splenda on a daily basis. Now after reading your story, I wonder if her chemo meds. were not being absorbed hence her early demise. This is scary stuff!!! I know her daughters would love to have their mom back. I miss her as well, as she was not only my sister but my best friend. Please get this out to doctors who are treating patients with cancer and possibly diabetic as well. Thanks so much for your work. Knowledge is power to make informed decisions!

Unfortunately, doctors don't tell patients that chemotherapy has never been proven to work for breast cancer. It is a moneymaking scam. In fact, chemo is about the worst thing to do for any cancer. Studies have shown that most doctors (who will happily administer chemo and radiation to their patients) would NOT use it on themselves or their families if they got cancer. But that aside, who knows if the Splenda didn't cause the cancer. It certainly wouldn't have helped. I am sorry you lost your sister.

This is soooo true. My daughter gets violently sick to her stomach and hallucinates when she eats or drinks anything with Splenda. What's worse is it is in soooo many products. Once again must read every label carefully to avoid the junk that is in our food. Better to make everything from scratch at home. That way you know what's in it.

don't forget that there may be a link to artificial sweeteners and brain tumors in children. I avoid artificial sweeteners like the plague. My daughter had a brain tumor and she would have consumed a lot of drinks with baspartame. You should always be careful where a drink or food is labelled as sugar free because it contains an artificial sweetener.

What should you do after discovering you have Type 11 diabetes? Think about what got you there: processed foods, chemicals, etc and retrain your self to eat plain untampered with foods, drink filtered water with lemon juice squeezed in, go back to what your great grandparents ate.

Raw, unpasteurized, local honey. Proven (contrary to idiot nutritionists) that raw honey does NOT increase your blood sugar. Also, agave nectar and stevia. Everyone a completely natural, god/nature made, substance. But, kill your yeast overgrowth and you may be amazed at how your symptoms disappear.

As usual, we are in agreement. Spenda and all the other sugar substitutes should never have reached the market. Stevia is good, so is guarana blue, but beware of their potency as they will make things very sweet if you use too much Our chapter on artificial sweeteners has received numerous testimonials from people who have seen remarkable results after changing their habits. New Yorkers need to understand what's happening with the "fat tax" imposed by the governor. A tax on regular soda, none on diet soda with the assumption that, first, either one is healthy, and then that sdiet soda fights obesity. The opposite is more true. Diet soda with aspartame or any other artificial sweetener will contribute to obesity.

The lovely thing is, since it "tastes" like sugar, doesn't have the same sort of aftertaste that aspartame does, manufacturers think it's ok to dump it into anything and everything - the *regular* versions of products are in some cases being replaced by "25% less sugar!" varieties, with no more options to buy the full sugar kind. Some products include the chemical from Senomyx that makes sugar taste sweeter, but some, like Sunny D (in Canada, anyhow), will show in smaller letters on the package "contains sucralose". No more "regular" or "diet" option - it's all chemicals for you! This just after a study released saying our local water here exceeds the lead limits...

Funny, I can taste the chemical without even knowing it is in a product. Bought some canned peaches, thought they were "light" as in, packed in light syrup vs heavy syrup. First bite I could taste the chemical and KNEW it wasn't sugar. Sure enough, checked the can and "Made with Splenda". Needless to say I am biding my time to canning season. I will use unrefined cane sugar before I eat that poison again.

Once many years ago, when they introduced Nutrasweet i did drink the sodas and sometimes used the sachets I found it far too sweet, and it still had an awful aftertaste, so i gave it up. easier to use honey or less sugar. I now cook for a diabetic friend, i used Splenda at her behest as i had some. i tried a crumb!! of some biscuits i made, using 1/2 of the suggested product, and i simply could not eat any food cooked with this horrible stuff. I also recently bought some Doritos brand chips. tasted strange! yup!! hidden in the ingredient list was aspartame. to the bin they went too!! even the chooks and ants avoided them..smarter than us dumb humans! i will be forwarding this page, and hoping some of my friends DO take the time to be informed. and wise up.

I told someone a while back that when I was trying to curb myself from soda, I started drinking flavored water. Didn't taste bad...like at all...then like an hour later, my stomach was having a fit. I thought it was something I ate earlier in the day. The next day right after a workout, I had a different flavored water...stomach again. Sure nuff? SPLENDA on the label. Wont touch the stuff. And glad to know that you're on the case...

e Also watch out for G2 gatorade. My kids play sports and they know to drink only water but oftentimes, well meaning (albeit ignorant) parents try to give them something with artificial sweeteners in it. Its sad that so many kids today are drinking "diet" sodas and other flavored drinks.

I looked up the source article, and for once, I found it even more alarming than Mercola's version. The one about sucralose decreasing gut microbes in rats? The body weight equivalent dose for the rats was not very high at all, only 100mg/kg. That's 6 grams per day for a medium sized adult, a person could easily get that much or more. Sometimes, people do a study of a chemical by exposing lab animals to 1000 times more of it than people normally get, then decide that if it's very bad at high levels of exposure, it's a little bad at low levels. This is not scientifically valid, many substances (including Vitamin A) are toxic at high levels and safe or beneficial at low ones. This study? Looked at normal levels of exposure. So, it's back to real food.

Over time I am gradually becoming certain that time-saving short cuts in food preparation are more like time-losing shortcuts on our life span. Make space in your kitchen cupboards for sprouting jars (and sprout from organic seeds) - and sprouts taste SWEET!! and prepare as much as possible of your food from basics. I have found that cream will thicken a gravy or pasta sauce quite well, and pureed apple can be used instead of sugar or sweeteners in baking. Over time the only artificial foods in our house will be in my husband's snack cupboards.

A couple of meals ago, about 1.5 hours prior, I felt hungry. Normally I do not snack between meals but was tempted to take some chocolate. By the time the meal arrived I was tetchy and could feel it and did not feel so good either. What could have been in the chocolate to cause this effect; could it have been the sweetener which was stated to be honey or what else could cause this affect? Remember the saying which goes, 'some people must think I am a mushroom as the keep me in the dark and feed me with bull'!

Consider this site with fake honey containing processed foods: http://bee-quick.com/wall/funny.html So don't believe that there is honey in your chocolate.

Chocolate has a considerable amount of caffeine and sugar. The caffeine can make you feel "wired" and jittery while the sugar can cause a spike in insulin, followed by a sudden drop. This is hypoglycemia. It makes you feel as though you are without energy. The two together can make you feel "not so good". You'll feel full of energy and won't have those cravings for snacks between meals if you follow a diet that is appropriate for your particular type per Dr. Mercola's book and adheres to the guidelines of Dr. Rosedale or Byron Richards' "Leptin diet". Google "Leptin" and you'll see what I mean. Good Luck!

The problem with XYLITOL is that it is a proven fact that it will KILL your dog if not rushed in time. Ask any veterinarian that is up to date ,if your dog gets it through your chewing gum, crumbs left on the floor or the trash he/she will get so sick that if not rushed immediately they will die. Not that I would let my pet near my people diet food, but that Xylitol is scary. I don't know enough about other sweetners but I do know that Xylitol kills pets.

Grapes and raisins will cause your dog to have renal (kidney) failure. Their body chemistry is much different from ours and the grapes cause a chemical to be formed in dogs bodies (bromide I believe?) that does not have the same effect on humans. Don't trust your dog's physiology to tell you what is poison or not!

don't forget that there may be a link to artificial sweeteners and brain tumors in children. I avoid artificial sweeteners like the plague. My daughter had a brain tumor and she would have consumed a lot of drinks with aspartame. You should always be careful where a drink or food is labelled as sugar free because it contains an artificial sweetener.

I must say this looks like a good article and good comments. What I cannot understand is why people and experts can base their assumptions on a study they like rather than on the motives behind it. If I want to proof something, I will keep on doing a study till the results proof what I want or alternatively, I won't publish the study. The 110 studies referred to was , with the exception of 2, also done on animals and the comments were that this is for that reason not significant. Why is the fact that this one was done on animals not relevant? To make any assumptions on this single study on animals, whilst 2 of the previous ones were done on humans at least, makes no sense. I can send anyone an article "150 reasons not to use sugar". Now the question: what must we use to "sweeten" up our lifes? I think the answer lies in moderation. God made our bodies with lots of "weapons" to protect us against bad things, either sugar, stevia, splenda, aspertame or sugar. The answer lies in moderation.

How about raw honey? Fabulous sweetener and completely different taste from cooked to death store honey. Doesn't increase blood sugar levels, reasonably priced and usually locally grown, so you are also helping a neighbor feed his family.

"The answer lies in moderation." Tell me Sakkie, what is a moderate intake of cyanide or ammonia? When aspartame was first introduced and put into diet coke, I was served a glass at a neighbor's house. The top of my scalp became numb, and I instantly knew that this was a toxic substance. There is no appropriate or healthy use of toxic chemicals. Nutrasweet should never have been approved by the FDA. It was turned down for many years until Reagan's new FDA commissioner- the ex CEO of Monsanto- got it approved over the objections of the review group- which concluded that it might induce brain tumors. Read the history here: http://www.rense.com/general33/legal.htm

See, it is obvious from all these comments from people that are still sugar craving and using other substances to replace the sweet. Folks, it is YEAST screaming at you to feed it. All the chemicals, all the fat, all the sugar are feeding your bad gut bacteria. I would bet a bunch of you with sweet tooths have allergies. I firmly believe they are connected. Kill the yeast, enjoy a life without cravings. I am AMAZED!

I tried to tell someone one time that Splenda is bad for you and he just said it is sugar. I told him it is MADE from sugar and is a chemically altered substance and he looked at me like I was out of my mind and proceeded in putting a big box (at Costco) into his cart and shake his head and walk away. I firmly believe the closer to nature we stay with our food the better off we are.

Glad I never liked any artificial sweetners! I never liked the after-taste. Besides sweetners, I have to watch everything I eat because of my soy allergy. http://www.hiddensoy.com

I feel if man created it out of a lab, it is poison, plain and simple. It might not kill you right away, but it WILL kill you.

Splenda was the popular sweetener of 1998 which was offered and accepted by the FDA for our "safe food consumption". I am amazed, by the clients I treat for weight loss at The STOP Clinic in Cary, NC, at the number who are consuming large amounts of Splenda ! The latest and safest sweetener is now, a plant called, "Stevia", sold in health food groceries, like Whole Foods. Dr. Mercola, Is there anything wrong with Stevia ??? Is it truly safe for human consumption ? Thanking you in advance for your reply, stopclinic.com

How about when we all learn that splenda is put in Pedialyte, the kids hydration fluids. It is just amazing how far we have gone with splenda.
