Ah yes, another gadget that transfers control to the corporations. This foolishness is getting old. Why don't we do something that actually helps? Why not build an over-unity device like is being done in Dublin http://www.steorn.com/ . Click on ORBO 2009 Launch. . They are looking for about 300 engineering companies or qualified engineers(enterprising individuals) to implement this free energy motor(Think; free on-site energy to power your home). These solutions can be done on each person's property for total energy independence. Or maybe using the searsolution which is also an anti-gravity device http://www.searlsolution.com/index.html Anti-gravity motor tech is available here too http://users.elo.com.br/~deaquino/. Also John Kanzius' Water Fuel Cell is cool. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4OklIm5a1Lc

wow. wowowowowowow. right before our very eyes the government is taking over f*%ing everything. I can't believe this. What will fines/penalties be to not use this smart meter. With companies forced to make more energy efficient appliances, it'll drive up prices for the consumer or they'll have to let go workers or a combination of both.

"It will result in a grid that can detect outages before they happen, and re-route power where it is needed"
WOW. So this new system can detect a tree limb about to fall on a power line?..... It can see the traffic accident that wipes out a pole or transformer? it can tell that a transformer is about to blow because it was struck by lightning? I am impressed. Now if they could only install the same technology on their Health Care bill......

It is all about controlling what we do. these meters introduce the ability to turn off power with the click of a mouse by some stimulus created job hack because you have an extra guest in your home and your usage goes up by a kwh... GET OUT OF MY PERSONAL LIFE!!!!!!!!

Yet another joke on the American people.

"installation costs have increased utility bills".

Great, just, great. Now Big Brother can monitor our energy usage and make sure we do not exceed our daily energy ration. Oh boy, new energy usage standards for appliances, what's that gonna add to the cost? And will we be fined, imprisoned or both if we don't not purchase said appliances?

The technology is fine as long as I'm not forced to use it. My comfort and quality of living comes first.
