Obama’s first major military excursion: Marines launch huge op in south Afghanistan
One day after U.S. troops officially vacated Iraqi cities, handing control over security to the Iraqis themselves for the first time since 2003, America’s “other war” has been ramped up significantly.
According to breaking media reports, some 4,000 Marines and 650 Afghan troops are involved in a massive operation, launched early Thursday morning, to reclaim the Helmand River Valley from Taliban control.
The Washington Post reports that U.S. forces descended on Helmand province in helicopters and armored convoys. The sparsely-populated, arid area lost its government services after the Taliban evicted government officials and police officers.
The operation, the Post reports, represents a major tactical change for forces in Afghanistan:
Once Marine units arrive in their designated towns and villages, they have been instructed to build and live in small outposts among the local population. The brigade’s commander, Brig. Gen. Lawrence D. Nicholson, said his Marines will focus their efforts on protecting civilians from the Taliban, and on restoring Afghan government services, instead of a series of hunt-and-kill missions against the insurgents.
Helmand province’s main river valley accounts for half the world’s opium production, the Post states.
Reuters reports “flares in the sky over the town of Nawa, south of the provincial capital Lashkar Gah.”
The news service notes that British-led forces, responsible for the area thus far, have struggled to keep the Taliban at bay.
The United States has sent 8,500 Marines to Helmand province in the last two months, the largest wave of a massive buildup of forces that will see the number of U.S. troops in Afghanistan rise from 32,000 at the beginning of this year to 68,000 by year’s end.
President Barack Obama has declared the Taliban insurgency in Afghanistan and neighbouring Pakistan to be the main security threat facing the United States.
The BBC notes that a major part of the challenge will be to win over the sympathies of the local population once Helmand province is in the hands of Western forces.
“One of the most critical things is to tell people why we’re there, and we are going to have a limited opportunity to gain their trust,” Brig.-Gen. Larry Nicholson said at a military briefing last week.
UPDATE
McClatchy news service is reporting that U.S. troops in Afghanistan have been given orders to fall back if they think civilians are at risk during an operation.
Army Gen. Stanley McChrystal, the top commander in Afghanistan, will issue the directive as part of an effort to cut down on civilian casualties, which have enraged the Afghan government and residents. Instead of calling in air support or firing into civilian homes where Taliban fighters have sought refuge, commanders will be instructed to reach out to tribal elders or undertake other efforts to dislodge the fighters.
Another McClatchy article says James L. Jones, retired Marine Corps four- star general and national security adviser to President Obama, has declared that no more U.S. troops will be sent to Afghanistan this year.
In an exclusive interview with the news service, Jones said “that he’d told commanders on the ground that the time for debate was over three months ago and that it’s time to implement the new three-step plan with the troops already committed, plus a renewed emphasis on economic development and the rule of law.”
EDITOR’S NOTE: An earlier version of this article cited a BBC source as saying this marks the largest Marine operation since the Vietnam War. That claim could not be verified, and the BBC has since taken down the article in which this was reported. We have removed the statement from our report.

Change you can believe in!!!!!!!
And I voted for this guy. I wonder if bush gave Obama his “Mission Accomplished” cod piece. He wants to be a “War President”.
Wants to be a war president? He ALREADY is one. He started droning Pakistan and killing innocent people there damn-near as soon as he took that waste of time oath of office to defend, protect and uphold the US Constitution which he has helped to shred (that’s why it was a waste of time).
Savior and War Criminal Obama is just following what War Criminal Cheney tells him to do.
And some loons expect War Criminal Obushma to “go after” and prosecute War Criminals Cheney and Bush? LOL. DUH. One wonders what drugs some people are on.
he campaigned on “moving into Afghanistan and out of Iraq”.. did you not pay attention to that bit?
That’s part of why I didn’t support him.
This won’t end well for Obama or the US. Do they think the locals REALLY want them there to “protect them” from natve Afghans the US P.R. labels “Taliban”?
Ask the Russians what happens to an occupier when one of these Marines is caught……
Holy shit it appears that Blowbama does not read history books. The limeys tried this (1878-1880), and really had their asses handed to them. How quickly these criminal mutts forget, or pretend to forget while ordering the Marines to do THE SAME FUCKING THING 129 years later. As if they have not had the time to study the limey after-action reports. Ah, fuck the limeys are all a bunch of bedwetting sniggets anyways. Fucking tea-sipping-pinkie-in-the-air cross dressers.
Afghanistan is no place for CAP (Civil Action Patrol), but then neither was Vietnam. A lot of good Marines and Corpsmen died that way. One was too many. Fucking Westmoreland condemning a handful of really great guys for fucking nothing. And I mean fucking nothing. Burn in hell you cocksucker, along with your butt-buddy McNamara.
I have been saying this for years, the only way out this late in the game is mutiny. But it appears that we don’t even have the balls for that anymore. Jesus H. Christ. Today’s Corps is completely fucked-up and has fucked us all. Zero leadership. Looks like us vet’s are going to have to dust off the M-1s and reloaders. Hell, believe it or not our 782 gear is light years better than the mickey mouse crap they have today. Hose it off and we are in business. We had way better dope too. Enough high grade shit in a pilot survival pack to stay high for a week. We loved the pilots and they loved our souvenir AK’s. Sometimes we didn’t sleep for weeks at a time.
Ahh, the good old days, when you could actually get away with a fragging if done properly. I personally liked the idea of the M26, pin pulled and rubber-band around the spoon dropped in the officers shitter. The crap ate away the rubber-band not too long after and then BOOOOM. This field-expedient had to be scrapped however after a couple of privates had their asses blown away burning shitters.

I’m afraid you are absolutely correct. Obama has probably been convinced that he can aggro his way out of Afghanistan, but that’s been found to be quite difficult. He’ll most likely get his ass handed to him on a platter for doing this shit.
To your other point, I don’t think it’s a matter of balls with your fellow Marines that they don’t mutiny. They’ve got plenty of balls as far as I see. Their problem is brainwashing, as you should know well. If they understood what you understand, there would be not stopping them.
There used to be a time when we had both brains and balls. Otherwise, you didn’t make it out of boot. Each are useless without the other, or your Sgt./Plt. Leader picked up your slack until your shit together, that is if you looked promising. Otherwise you had the can tied around you. In our class at MCRD San Diego, we started with 79 recruits and graduated 42. Kind of gives you an idea of how things have changed.
Yeah man, the Taliban ain’t pussies either. And they are fighting for a fucked-up cause they believe in. Obama’s fucked. Wait until we start coming home in those cheap fucking metal caskets.

I still keep a place near Ft. Hood Texas I check on when I’m back stateside, the condition of the soldiers is getting WAAAY worse. The average company is given enough anti-depressants, mood-lifters and Z-bars to overdose all of burning man. The average soldier today looks like they would have been 4-F back when it was still called 4-F. Very few exhibit much mental stability, the local strippers and bartenders tell me horror stories of guys breaking down, or becoming serious stalkers(your local strippers and bartenders are your best source of ascertaining the local mental health condition.). The murder rate on and around post is flying through the roof, things are NOT pretty, to say the least. Then there are what the soldiers themselves are telling me.. few of them believe in much of anything anymore, least of all their leadership. Many are now just economic refugees, forced to go into the military just to feed their kids, only to find out that feeding the kids means not having much to do with raising them, what with the 3rd, 4th, 5th tours back to back. Also, plenty are getting hacked off at the little games that are played to (successfully) keep them away from their benefits. Morale is beyond low, it at times seems to border on mutinous. Add into it that many of these guys seem to lack the brain-power to know who to be mad at, and occasionally just lash out at the world in general. Many who come back are truly disenfranchised, and it shows. I’m headed back to my hidey-hole next week, I can barely believe what I see around here. This is gonna go REEEEAL BAAAD.
rapists, gang bangers, high school dropouts.. not just way worse, untenably worse.
Good luck man.
Tell me again, why are we and our troops in Afghanistan?
There’s a huge oil pipeline and opium trade to be protected .
when bin Laden was alive, he was given safe shelter there.
but he’s dead now..
so we’re there for .. uh.. the taliban? because they harbored bin Laden when he was alive?
or those pipelines that Clinton got started on..
10 bux says we leave tail-tucked like the last superpower.
any takers?
the last “super power” was collapsing when they invaded.. we spend more on military than the next few nations combined.. I think we can lay MUCH more waste to the region than the ‘last super power that was there’.
that doesn’t mean we can win
but I doubt we’ll have to tuck tail and run..
Not me kelly. I only bet on sure things, and this sure thing is I ain’t bettin against you. That fucking mope a dope in the Oval Office really has his head up some general’s ass and is really suffering from lack of oxygen or he’s been putting some in those goddamn cigarettes he smokes. This fuckwad really is off base for first believing his goddamn Pentagon fucks, and then believing he is gonna do armies through the centuries have been unable to do: Kick Ass in Afghanistan. Those people are gonna start sending home body bags. Way too bad for mom, dad, wives, and kids of these guys getting killed for what? The same fucking Lyndon Johnson Corporate Bullshit other Marines died needlessly for.
Obama, here’s my deepest heartfelt thought for you: PLEASE HAVE A FUCKING FATAL STROKE AND DROP DEAD YOU GODDAMN WAR CRIMINAL!
Endless war and hypocrisies, where’s the effin change? The only solution is to throw all the Democraps and Repugnants out and then start all over with new parties that haven’t been corrupted. Vote Green, Vote Independent, Vote anything but for either established party - do not get fooled again.
I agree. However, what you wrote is not about to happen as you probably already know.
That “Dem Team” and “Repug Team” partisan shit is indoctrinated into most people (just like the Floating Cloud Being shit) and until the people CHANGE, the people will keep repeating the same routine one election cycle after the other. Most people will vote for savior Obushma once again in 2012 and they will make one excuse after the other for doing so. Yes, it is pathetic but that’s the sheep for you. Existing party line and the status quo is what it’s about.
This is going to make Vietnam look like a boy-scout jamboree. Afghanistan is the graveyard of many an empire.
never trust a negro
And the people that make it back, if there are ever allowed to are going make us vets look like Kumbayah-singing fucking flower children. The only good thing about this is that the cops are going to have a blast with it (literally). Better store up some of them body-bags for domestic use.

“…Helmand province’s main river valley accounts for half the world’s opium production…”
That answers most of my questions.
We’ve got to grow up as a nation and accept that our troops don’t fight for the stars n stripes, they fight for this:

They are actually just Chinese mercenaries, since that’s who’s bankrollin the thing.
Obama seems to doing his best to become the LBJ of the 21st century. It should probably come as no surprise if Obama were to declare, like Johnson, that victory is “just around the corner.”
“Imperialism, like dictatorship, sears the soul, degrades the spirit, and makes individuals small, the better to rule them. Fear and cowardice are its allies. Imperialism is government of other people, by other people, and for other people.”- Louis Fischer [1896-1970], American journalist
I wonder why,,,
I wonder why before 9/11 the neighbors PET GOAT attacked me,,,
It matches the book Bush was reading on 9/11,,,My PET GOAT…
Then with Rothchilds MK Ultra,CIA and Pentagon,,they had me carve “FBI VICTIM in the ankles of my legs with a BOX CUTTER,,,2 times..
Then on Memorial weekend,,May 2001 they had a man strike up a conversation about small engine pilots schools and liceanses,,,
I was on a plane to NEW YORK…
Wow the Rothchilds via MK Ultra’ were discussing the 9/11 Fairytale they were going to tell the American people many months before 9/11..in my brain…
They even had the book selected that Bush was going to be reading on 9/11 decided,,,wow…
I’ll have to find out what else was in the 9/11 fairytale commission report..
Taliban Seize U.S. Soldier in Afghanistan - - Wonder if this person will make it out of there alive?
I still love this RAW comment login protocol. LOL!
Should have added - - Hope they don’t torture this person like we torture them.
The afghan caves are the same as the ol’ story of Brer Rabbit and Brer Fox, “please don’t throw me in the briar patch,” says Brer Rabbit . Well now, just try to get them out of there.
