The rise of widespread nutritional deficiencies in the western world correlates almost perfectly with the introduction of the microwave oven. This is no coincidence. Microwave ovens heat food through a process of creating molecular friction, but this same molecular friction quickly destroys the delicate molecules of vitamins and phytonutrients (plant medicines) naturally found in foods. One study showed that microwaving vegetables destroys up to 97% of the nutritional content (vitamins and other plant-based nutrients that prevent disease, boost immune function and enhance health).
In other words, eating raw broccoli provides you with natural anti-cancer medicine that's extremely effective at halting the growth of cancer tumors. But microwaving that broccoli destroys the anti-cancer nutrients, rendering the food "dead" and nutritionally depleted. There's even some evidence to suggest that microwaving destroys the natural harmony in water molecules, creating an energetic pattern of chaos in the water found in all foods. In fact, the common term of "nuking" your food is coincidentally appropriate: Using a microwave is a bit like dropping a nuclear bomb on your food, then eating the fallout. (You don't actually get radiation from eating microwaved foods, however. But you don't get much nutrition, either.)
Why microwave users are so unhealthyConsumers are dying today in part because they continue to eat dead foods that are killed in the microwave. They take a perfectly healthy piece of raw food, loaded with vitamins and natural medicines, then nuke it in the microwave and destroy most of its nutrition. Humans are the only animals on the planet who destroy the nutritional value of their food before eating it. All other animals consume food in its natural, unprocessed state, but humans actually go out of their way to render food nutritionally worthless before eating it. No wonder humans are the least healthy mammals on the planet.
The invention of the microwave and its mass adoption by the population coincides with the onset of obesity in developed nations around the world. Not only did the microwave make it convenient to eat more obesity-promoting foods, it also destroyed much of the nutritional content of those foods, leaving consumers in an ongoing state of malnourished overfeeding. In other words, people eat too many calories but not enough real nutrition. The result is, of course, what we see today: Epidemic rates of diabetes, cancer, heart disease, depression, kidney failure, liver disorders and much more. These diseases are all caused by a combination of malnutrition and exposure to toxic chemicals (plus other factors such as emotional trauma, lack of exercise, etc.). Microwaves make malnutrition virtually automatic, and being exposed to toxic chemicals is easy to accomplish by simply eating processed foods (which are universally manufactured with the addition of toxic chemicals that act as preservatives, colorings, flavor enhancers and so on).
Microwaving is, technically, a form of food irradiation. I find it interesting that people who say that would never eat "irradiated" food have no hesitation about microwaving their food. It's the same thing (just a different wavelength of radiation). In fact, microwaves were originally called "radar ranges." Sounds strange today, doesn't it? But when microwaves were first introduced in the 1970's, they were proudly advertised as radar ranges. You blast your food with high-intensity radar and it gets hot. This was seen as some sort of space-age miracle in the 1970's. Perhaps someday an inventor will create a food heating device that does not radically alter the nutritional value of the foods in the process, but I'm not holding my breath on this one. Probably the best way to heat foods right now is to simply use a countertop toaster oven, and keep the heat as low as possible.
The microwave does work as advertised, by the way. It makes your food hot. But the mechanism by which heat is produced causes internal damage to the delicate molecular structures of vitamins and phytonutrients. Minerals are largely unaffected, however, so you'll still get the same magnesium, calcium and zinc in microwaved foods as you would in non-microwaved foods, but the all-important B vitamins, anthocyanins, flavonoids and other nutritional elements are easily destroyed by microwave ovens.
The microwave is the appliance of the living dead. People who use the microwave on a regular basis are walking down a path towards degenerative disease and a lifelong battle with obesity. The more you use the microwave, the worse your nutritional state gets, and the more likely you are to be diagnosed with various diseases and put on pharmaceuticals which, of course, will create other health problems that lead to a grand spiraling nosedive of health.
Do yourself a favor: Toss your microwave, or donate it to some charity. It's much easier to avoid using the microwave if you don't have one around. It will clear up counter space, save you electricity and greatly enhance your dietary habits. When you need to heat something, heat it in a toaster oven or a stovetop pan (avoid Teflon and non-stick surfaces, of course). Better yet, strive to eat more of a raw, unprocessed diet. That where you'll get the best nutrition anyway. Buy yourself a Vita-Mix and blend up some smoothies. It's faster than microwaving foods are far healthier. (See my book Superfood Smoothies for recipes).
I drink a superfood smoothie every morning, and I haven't used a microwave in years. Protecting health is our own responsibility, and it's up to us all to make informed decisions about how we buy, prepare and consume our foods. You have to save yourself. Comments from readers:Hi Mike, I like your article on avoiding the microwave. You dont mention conventional ovens, however. For frozen items such as the Amys burritos and other Amys products, can they be heated in a toaster oven? Are there any dangers from conventional ovens? Thanks! - Lexington Minneapolis USA
Dont donate your nuker to a charity. The poor have enough problems. Put it in the metal recycling bin. - Kirk
Could someone please post links to the quote: evidence quote that supports this opinion. I have a hard time with quote: opinion quote pieces that dont give the reader a chance to examine the evidence. - PAS
microwaves do have their place in my household. I could not do without one to heat up my ricebags. My feet and I are nice and toasty. or if I have a cold, my rice bag is there to relieve the pain in my chest. So no, I dont agree with your recommendation to dump the microwave, I couldnt live without it. Maybe you want to move your microwave to the bedroom tho. - hotpockets mill creek wa
How specifically is using the micro wave to warm up your food that much different from backing, or toasting as you suggest? Yes raw is best, no question there. But in reality both methods of heating food create movement the molecules which heats and yes kills your food.

Rusia abolished microwaves a long time ago and since them I stop using my, it is now a remember of how fool I was, reading your article I found that every day a new emerging person realize and choose a better life throught foods as we was ever intended to eat them - Jose R Lanz São Paulo Brazil
I like how this piece brings to attention the nutrient degradation caused by cooking foods. Many foods are inedible/dangerous when uncooked (kidney beans, many tubers, etc..) However, it is not clear how micro-waving compares with grilling, baking, boiling, steaming, or frying. Grilling can produce carcinogens (burnt/browned fats). Frying is typically not desirable either (toxins produced by carbs during the frying process). Quantitative data that compares different cooking methods and analyzes the side effects of each would help add credibility to this article for us analytical types. As of now, Ive seen little data that compares toxin levels and nutrient levels between steaming and microwaving. - Kevin Dallas
Im real tired of people blaming microwave ovens when the exact same process (molecular friction) happens on a regular stove. The heating process, whether by fire, electrcity, or microwave, excits atoms/molecules into a vibrational state. The more excited, the hotter they get. The reality here is that ANY cooking detroys the nutrient value of your food and the only way to get the maximum nutireints from ANY food is to eat it raw.
Stop blaming technology and look for guilt in societys tendency toward laziness. - Rich Maurine USA
So the onset of the microwave correlates to the onset of obesity. I wonder what else might correlate? How about the onset of the fast food franchises? How about other things both known and unknown. I would be more likely to believe these articles if they didnt jump to conclusions, sensationalize, and insult our intelligence. How about a couple of scientific references on the topic so we can see the work that was done if we want to. Maybe even studies that dont agree with each other. And while youre at it, how about listing who paid for the work to be done? I am thinking the microwave oven industry has probably funded some research that shows all the nutrients remain intact. Go figure. - Call me cynical Santa Rosa, CA
How does microwaving our food compare with simply cooking our food on a stove? Does cooking on the stove kill off the same amount of nutritional value as microwaving, or 10 percent less or 20 percent less or does it depend on the type of food and the type of cooking? - Karl Pasadena
The rise of widespread nutritional deficiencies in the western world correlates almost perfectly with the introduction of REFINED SUGAR. - Chase USA

I am in agreement that microwaves should not be used. However rather than donating them to charity, I believe it would be better to destroy you microwave with a hammer. This way no one will be harmed by your microwave again. Dan - Dan Sarver San Antonio USA
Why would you take your microwave to a thrift store, where someone else will use it to destroy their food? I think it would be better to sell it as scrap. - Helen Conyers, GA USA
We threw our microwave out around five years ago because of health concerns. The adjustment period to working in the kitchen without it was less than two weeks. I purchased a counter-top convection toaster oven which warms foods without loss of flavor, I do at least 50 percent of my baking in it now, which saves heating the large oven for small items. No one in our family misses the microwave at all. - Marcia La Crosse, Wisconsin USA
Microwave ovens only shake the water molecules causing friction and therefore heat. Usually we pour the vitamins and minerals down the drain when we use a cooktop range when we drain the water that has been added to vegetables. I am a Home Economist and think this article is a bit radical. - Patty Evansville USA
great article - lets stop suggesting we donate unhealthful things to charity and stop doing it. instead of donating appliances and food that we find not good for quote: us quote, it nothing else, buy a bag of beans for a buck. - Michael greenville, michigan u.s.a.
I have seen this assertion that microwaving is bad, but I would like to see some real test results.

have used a microwave for approx 20 years and at 60 still have fairly good health though mainly use it for warming up but still have a this question , if microwaving destroys food in the way described why does food prepared this way have great flavour especially if flavenoids are destroyed? veges in particular , hope someone can explain this - bruce palmerston north New Zealand
I found your article interesting but wondered if you had read the research done by Swiss researcher Hans Hertel who was taken to court for highlighting the health hazards of microwaving. More info at web site: chetday.com/microwave.html - Diane Surrey England
Hello Mike. I generally appreciate reading your newsletter, as it flags up issues under your radar that are of interest.
However, I find it discouraging that you never provide references to something to support your claims (which I so very much endorse myself, but if I am to further use this I need more evidence).
This Microwave is an example in point, where while searching the scientific reports on the effects of MW of the nutritional value of foods I found only conclusions to the opposite. examples:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez?Db=PubMed&Cmd=ShowDetailView&TermToSearch=7047080&ordinalpos=1&itool=EntrezSystem2.PEntrez.Pubmed.Pubmed_ResultsPanel.Pubmed_RVAbstractPlus
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez?Db=pubmed&Cmd=ShowDetailView&TermToSearch=3894486&ordinalpos=2&itool=EntrezSystem2.PEntrez.Pubmed.Pubmed_ResultsPanel.Pubmed_RVDocSum
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez?Db=pubmed&Cmd=ShowDetailView&TermToSearch=15762308&ordinalpos=8&itool=EntrezSystem2.PEntrez.Pubmed.Pubmed_ResultsPanel.Pubmed_RVDocSum Please provide reference to that study that found that 97 percent of the nutrients are lost in MW cooking.
Please, Id like to use this as an evidence to support calling for the elimination of MW ovens (I already threw away mine).
Please understand that without such references to studies when you mention them, or even on a regular basis to support claims, theres very little use I can do with your valuable information and cite it elsewhere. Regards,

Hello Mike,
Excellent article about microwave ovens. One comment only about: Do yourself a favor: Toss your microwave, or donate it to some charity. Better not to donate it at all! Just throw it away! Best regards from Holland. Jan - lightnet Eindhoven Holland
I agree with you regarding microwaves. But Mike, if they are bad enough to toss because of the irradiation, why would they be good enough to donate to a charity? Is there any redeeming quality about them? - DR
Hi Mike:
You would gain a great deal of credibility with skeptics like me if, when referring to a scientific study as proof of your claims, you actually specify which study, where, and when so I can verify your accuracy. If you dont offer those details but instead make a vague reference to quote: one study found quote it leads me to believe youre blowing smoke to back up your opinion. Give me facts or else youre just another self proclaimed internet health guru whos pushing everything in his Web store! - Deb
Its true, microwaves destroy the natural harmony of water molecules, I read an experiment in Trudeaus Natural Cures book: Plant two seeds/beans in separate clay pots, but water one with purified water, and the other with quote: nuked quote water. Let them grow, and you will see one of the seeds will never sprout. Or, even, try watering two plants with the waters each treated differently as with the previous experiment. This is a great article with interesting (but true) logic. Microwaves can really be the death of us. - Ray
Microwave ovens utilize a specific frequency range where the wavelength is equal to the distance between the hydrogen atoms of the water molecule. This translates into an energy transfer system that is specific to items that contain water. - No Water, No Energy Transfer. I agree that people should not cook most things in a microwave. But there are perfectly good uses for microwave ovens:
heating a cup of water
warming the last half of your cup of tea
cooking a potato (once in a while)
defrosting a couple of pieces of frozen bread So, dont toss the microwave oven, use it intelligently. - Larry Irwin Greenville, SC USA
Dont toss your microwave. They are great for killing 99 percent of the bacteria on your kitchen sponge. Before cooking your sponge, make sure it is wet or it will burn. - Jimmy Trenton USA
Below is a link to a New York Times article that says quite the opposite.

Thank you for this important information. And I appreciate your article with one exception.
I cannot agree with you suggestion that people give their microwaves to charity. This is a dreadful suggestion. It is our responsibility to do no harm.
If microwaves are indeed harmful...please do not give them to friends or quoteL charity quote. In fact let non-profits and charitable organizations know about the dangers of microwaves. We want all the people of the world to live healthy lives.
Mike people listen to your advice!!! PLEASE amend this article. - Do No Harm London Canada
Hello, This and other articles would be much more efficient and convincing if the basic facts and research results upon which this article was based, would have been published as well along with their source.

Telling people to toss their microwaves is a ridiculous thing to say. Its like telling people to quit driving because using gasoline is not a good thing. Its just not something people will do. Then...telling people to donate it to charity? Even more ridiculous! Should we donate it to the National Cancer Foundation? Quote: Here let me do something good for the world....take my donated microwave. Oh...by the way, itll do wonders for your cancer! quote There is a word. Its a very good word. More people should live by this word. Its pronounced: mod-er-ation! - Heather
