Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow -- in April

Storm brings rain, strong winds to Las Vegas region

A chill moved across Las Vegas late Tuesday and Wednesday, bringing lower temperatures and strong winds to the valley.

Five inches of snow fell Tuesday night on Mount Charleston, and trace amounts of rain were recorded at McCarran International Airport.

  • The National Weather Service said Wednesday's high was 59 degrees, which fell short of the record low high of 56 degrees set in 1998.

"This is definitely not your typical April day," said Barry Pierce, weather service meteorologist.

Flurries were spotted in parts of Summerlin and Henderson, while in other parts of Las Vegas, high winds took shingles off homes.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor said ferocious winds might have caused damage to a plane Tuesday afternoon at the North Las Vegas Airport.

Gregor said the single-engine Cessna 182 was attempting to land about 2:17 p.m. when a gust hit the plane.

"The pilot told us he encountered a strong gust of wind just as he landed," Gregor said. "That caused him to break his right wing and propeller" after hitting the pavement.

Gregor said the crash was being investigated by his agency, and he did not know the full extent of the damage. He said the pilot was taken to a local hospital but did not appear to have any injuries.

According to the FAA Web site, the plane is registered to a John Battaglia of Las Vegas.

National Weather Service meteorologist Edan Lindaman said the wintery weather was caused by a powerful storm system that swept through the valley early in the week. Wind gusts reached 61 mph at Red Rock Canyon on Tuesday night.

The last time snow fell in Las Vegas in April was on April 4,1958, making Wednesday's activity the latest snow sighting recorded to date.

Lindaman said the unusual weather won't stick around.

Temperatures will return to the 70s and 80s by the weekend. It could reach 90 degrees by Tuesday, Lindaman said.

You can't lose! If the world doesn't overheat and drive the stock through the roof, Obammy will just right them an eighty billion dollar check, freeze bonuses, and fire the CEO!

Skep41 wrote on April 17, 2009 08:02 AM: Luckily for Las Vegas your esteemed Senate Majority Leader has taken steps to lower Las Vegas' carbon footprint. There has been a severe drop in carbon emissions of Evil Corporations as they schedule their conventions in other cities, thanks to measures taken in Harry Reid's US Senate. As soon as Our Fearless Majority Leader shepherds the Carbon Tax through the Senate it will cut wasteful driving between Las Vegas and Los Angeles by at least two thirds. What a great benefit to the climate as those Polar Bear-killing lights on the Strip are finally turned out forever! I admire the wise voters of Nevada, a bunch of geniuses typified by Fair-and-Balanced-Fred, who arent waiting for the scientific evidence and who have decided to vote for paragons like Reid and Obama who will end the Carbon Crime of gambling casinos! Excessive consumerism is a crime against Mother Gaia and Reid and the Democrats have dedicated themselves to putting a stop to it. As the economy of Nevada implodes because your main industry has been destroyed you can all keep an eye on this newspaper to find out where our pal F&B Fred will be moving to after the demise of your state's largest industry renders the city uninhabitable. These Democrats are such geniuses; no one else in history has run on a platform of fixing the weather, and its a tribute to the intelligence of the Nevada electorate that they have signed on to this noble quest!

Steve wrote on April 17, 2009 07:45 AM: When is weather ever normal? Why is it that we, who are not politicians always try to play politics by labeling everyone? Why can't you have an opinion without being accused of being a 'hater' or a 'white person'. See, this drives me nuts. I don't think that we should pollute and be irresponsible in our treatment of nature. I also don't believe that we are causing changes in the weather because science has shown mass fluctuations of weather in the past that had nothing to do with humans. The simplest explanation is most often the correct one. It's WEATHER, climate...CHANGES, that's what it does! If you believe we are causing weather changes, fine, we can still BBQ together, or eat some Popsicles, no big deal. I just wish we would wake up to the fact that politicians (all of them) are trying to divide us on stupid issues like this. Politicians are no different that professional wrestlers, you've got your 'good' guys and your 'bad' guys. It's in their best interests to keep us divided so they can pander to us. If you have any anger, lets turn it toward them and not toward ourselves.

Fair and Balanced Fred wrote on April 16, 2009 07:23 PM: You can call it global warming or global climate change. It's the same thing. It is a crack-up to hear the AM radio simpletons think they have some kind of major point here.

The AM radio simpletons hate science, hate scientists, hate the Earth, and hate you and me.

Tell us, all of you AM radio simpletons below: how many of you ever had a class in basic statistics?

Dang it, California's ongoing drought is at crisis proportions, and Lake Mead, well, we won't even talk about that.

Did I tell you that the Bellagio is now a non-profit casino and got rid of their house advantage on all of their games? See my original post way below.

AM radio / ultra-right Republicans are about the stupidest, angry white-men on the planet.

No one can tell what the temperature can be for any given time. Global Warming is junk science so they changed the name to "Global Climate Change". The junk scientists state summers will be hotter and winters colder. Check these values for Las Vegas, and get some kind of consensus on warming trends. The only one is July's were hot in the 2000's. Other then that not all June's were the hottest nor August's. Look at the data. They cannot predict the future of the planet off of the last 30 years, you have to go back millions of years. No one can explain the "Little Ice Age" yet it occured in the 1500's.

and because global warming is caused by humans using the "wrong" lawn mower, taxpayers need to stop funding any mars expeditions to search for life there. since the mars polar ice caps are melting, what more proof is needed ?
