Spending on Lobbying Could Break Record in 2009

(AP)
Last year, $3.30 billion was spent on federal lobbying, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. That was the highest figure ever calculated.

This year it could go even higher.

CFR has calculated that in the first three quarters of 2009, $2.50 billion was spent to lobby Congress and federal agencies. If the average throughout the year holds, $3.33 billion will be spent this year. And there are indications that it could go higher.

"We would expect…an above-average fourth quarter just because of all the legislation that was in play," CFR spokesman Dave Levinthal told Hotsheet. He said he would be "not at all surprised if it was a very, very big fourth quarter."

There are more than a thousand fewer lobbyists registered in 2009 (13,426) than there were last year (14,808), though the total number of registered lobbyists this year will likely increase slightly when the final quarter is factored in.

Still, the figures suggest that more money is being spent on lobbying even as there are fewer lobbyists trying to influence legislation and a president who came to office pledging to reduce the influence of lobbyists.

Politico, which first noted the situation, points out that President Obama's ambitious agenda likely contributed to the heavy spending on lobbying. The stimulus package and the hashing out of the health care, regulatory reform and climate change bills have all encouraged lobbying by businesses and organizations that wanted a deal that served their interests.

“Lobbyists love it...when you’ve got an activist agenda like this, and you’ve got serious problems like this, and people want to do something about it,” James Thurber, director of American University’s Center for Congressional and Presidential Studies, told Politico.

Barack Obama is a pathological LIAR.

May his occupation of the White House be much shorter than a full term.

What would happen if lobbyist selective;y withheld money from political campaigns? This would throw the politicians into a tither as their war chests stopped receiving campaign money. If health care lobbyists have plied politicians with money but feel their interests haven't been met, they can teach politicians a lesson. It would anger me if my interests weren't met after piling on the money.

This is why our youth question what we say and what we believe. Why aren't these sins on humanity being preached loud from our pulpits.I guess they're to worried about their tax exempt status or somebody relaxing on their back porch smoking a joint. hypoc!

No suprise here, just as Harry Reid buys votes, so does lobbiests for special favors in pending legislation. When are the AMERICAN people going to get so outraged at all the corruption going on in Congress and Washington that they say very loudly, no matter what party you belong too they do this, that WE THE PEOPLE have had enough, clean up Washington and Congress or else we will come in and clean it up for you and you will be looking for work. Money & Power breed corruption and its so appearant in both the House & Senate. I thought Obama promised to clean up this mess, or was that just mere lip service to get elected by those he could fool.

You are talking about an incredibly powerful, corrupt and ingrained problem - lobbyists. The president knows this has to be corrected for the good of the country but it's going to take a whole lot more that just him to achieve it. It's going to take US to demand it and vote in candidates who promise to clean out lobbying entirely from our government.

us_1776 I thought that's what happened, we voted for change. Obama campaigned on getting rid of lobbiests and business as usual in Washington. Well it's still there and spending more since Obamas been president.

ALL lobbying needs to be outlawed. It does nothing but corrupt government.

Doesn't surprise me. All of those health care/pharma lobbyists were very busy spending money this past year and it really did pay off for them.
