The Evidence Against Soy

soy, dow chemical, dupont, myth, health food, fermentedDow Chemical and DuPont, the same corporations that brought misery and death to millions around the world through Agent Orange, are now the driving forces behind the promotion of soy as a food for humans. They are financing anti-meat and anti-milk campaigns aimed largely at those concerned about animal welfare and the environment, trying to convince them that imitations such as "soymilk" are not only healthier than the real thing, but better for the earth too.

There is no evidence that consuming soy products can improve health, reduce environmental degradation or slow global warming. In fact, the evidence suggests quite the opposite.

The studies below regarding the effects of soy on health are eye-opening, particularly the review by the American Heart Association -- which no longer supports the health claims about soy endorsed by the U.S. government.

If you were to carefully review the thousands of studies published on soy, I strongly believe you too would reach the conclusion that any possible benefits of consuming soy are FAR outweighed by the well documented risks.

Now, I’m not against all forms of soy. Properly fermented products like natto and tempeh have been consumed for centuries and do not wreak havoc in your body like unfermented soy products do. For example, the enzyme nattokinase—derived from natto--is a safer, more powerful option than aspirin to dissolve blood clots, and has been used safely for more than two decades.

Unfortunately, many Americans still believe that unfermented and processed soy products like soy milk, soy cheese, soy burgers and soy ice cream are good for them.

85 Percent of Consumers Believe the Lies About Soy

The rise of soy as a health food is in large part due to highly successful marketing to otherwise health conscious Americans who set the trend. According to the survey Consumer Attitudes About Nutrition 2008 (by the United Soybean Board), 85 percent of consumers now perceive soy products as healthy.

The survey also found that consumers:

  • rank soybean oil among the top three healthy oils, with 70 percent recognizing soy oil as a healthy oil, and
  • depend on soybean oil, commonly sold as vegetable oil, as one of their two most frequent cooking oils

This is a tragic case of shrewd marketing of misinformation and outright lies taking root among the masses, which will likely take some time to undo.

Ever since the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved a health claim for soy foods in 1999 (which said diets low in saturated fat and cholesterol that include 25 grams of soy protein a day may reduce the risk of heart disease), soy sales have skyrocketed. In the years between 2000 and 2007, food manufacturers in the U.S. introduced over 2,700 new foods with soy as an ingredient, including 161 new products introduced in 2007 alone. 

This has resulted in a booming multi-billion dollar business. From 1992 to 2007, soy food sales increased from a paltry $300 million to nearly $4 billion, according to the Soyfoods Association of North America.

However, the Weston A. Price Foundation, a nonprofit nutrition education foundation, submitted a petition to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in January of this year, asking them to retract its heart-health claim from soy in light of the inconsistent and contradictory evidence showing benefits, and its many proven health risks.

What’s So Wrong With Soy?

Unlike the Asian culture, where people eat small amounts of whole soybean products, western food processors separate the soybean into two golden commodities--protein and oil. And there is nothing natural or safe about these products.

Says Dr. Kaayla Daniel, author of The Whole Soy Story,

“Today's high-tech processing methods not only fail to remove the anti-nutrients and toxins that are naturally present in soybeans but leave toxic and carcinogenic residues created by the high temperatures, high pressure, alkali and acid baths and petroleum solvents."

Dr. Daniel also points out the findings of numerous studies reviewed by her and other colleagues -- that soy does not reliably lower cholesterol, and in fact raises homocysteine levels in many people, which has been found to increase your risk of stroke, birth defects, and yes: heart disease.

Other common health problems linked to a high-soy diet include:

Most soy, perhaps about 80 percent or more, is also genetically modified, which adds its own batch of health concerns.

Despite these findings, many people still want to believe the hype, thinking that these studies must somehow be wrong. But the content of soy itself should be a clue. For example, non-fermented soy products contain:

  • Phytoestrogens (isoflavones) genistein and daidzein, which mimic and sometimes block the hormone estrogen
  • Phytates, which block your body's uptake of minerals
  • Enzyme Inhibitors, which hinder protein digestion
  • Hemaggluttin, which causes red blood cells to clump together and inhibits oxygen take-up and growth
  • High amounts of omega-6 fat, which is pro-inflammatory

You’re Consuming Soy Whether You’re Buying “Soy Products” or Not

Even if you know better than to gulp down large amounts of soy milk, slabs of tofu, and other soy snacks, you are still consuming soy if you’re eating processed food, in the form of soybean oil and lecithin. So depending on your dietary habits, your (unfermented) soy consumption could really add up.

In fact, Dr. Joseph Hibbeln at the National Institutes of Health told CNN.com he estimates that soybeans, usually in the form of oil, account for 10 percent of the average person’s total calories in the United States! When you consider that 90 percent of the money Americans spend on food goes toward processed food, this amount of “accidental” soy intake is not surprising.

As a side note, I’d like to make a quick statement here to address some of my readers’ concerns about my reduced CoQ 10 supplement, ubiquinol, which also contain soy bean oil.

Unfortunately, the reduced CoQ 10 (ubiquinol) – which is the optimal form of CoQ 10 that your body needs, especially if you’re over 25 – is only produced by a multi-billion dollar Japanese pharmaceutical company that holds ALL the world patents on it. Hence, there’s no way to replace the soy, even though that would have been my preference.

However, as in all things, moderation is key. If I thought there were ANY significant health risks from consuming this small amount of soy oil, then I would not personally take two a day – which I do. I do however avoid all processed forms of soy products, and severely limit my intake of other unfermented soy, which is easy to do by simply avoiding processed and “fast” foods.

Which Soy Foods Should be Avoided … and How do You Avoid Them?

Because soy is so pervasive in the U.S. food supply, avoiding it is not an easy task.

The best way to completely avoid soy in the food supply is to buy whole foods and prepare them yourself. This may also be your only option if you’ve developed a soy allergy and need to eliminate soy from your diet entirely.  

If you still prefer to buy readymade and packaged products, for whatever reason, Dr. Daniel offers a free Special Report, "Where the Soys Are," on her Web site. It lists the many "aliases" that soy might be hiding under in ingredient lists -- words like "boullion," "natural flavor" and "textured plant protein."

Which Soy Foods DO Have Health Benefits? 

The few types of soy that ARE healthy are all fermented varieties. After a long fermentation process, the phytic acid and antinutrient levels of the soybeans are reduced, and their beneficial properties -- such as the creation of natural probiotics -- become available to your digestive system.

The fermentation process also greatly reduces the levels of dangerous isoflavones, which are similar to estrogen in their chemical structure, and can interfere with the action of your own estrogen production.

So if you want to eat soy that is actually good for you, following are all healthy options:

  1. Natto, fermented soybeans with a sticky texture and strong, cheese-like flavor. It's loaded with nattokinase, a very powerful blood thinner. Natto is actually a food I eat regularly, as it is the highest source of vitamin K2 on the planet and has a very powerful beneficial bacteria, bacillus subtilis. It can usually be found in any Asian grocery store.
  2. Tempeh, a fermented soybean cake with a firm texture and nutty, mushroom-like flavor.
  3. Miso, a fermented soybean paste with a salty, buttery texture (commonly used in miso soup).
  4. Soy sauce: traditionally, soy sauce is made by fermenting soybeans, salt and enzymes, however be wary because many varieties on the market are made artificially using a chemical process.

Everyone needs to stay away from this POISON.  I test for soy problems in the body and it shows up all the time.  I find so many with thyroid problems and breast cancer are toxic from soy and essentially are eating themselves to death with these poisons.  Unless you eat the real stuff like natto, miso, or tempeh once in a while in small portions like the Japanese which is okay, stay away from all other processed sources.  Throw out that soy milk poison and drink either raw milk or unsweetened almond milk...The public really needs to understand how toxic soy really is...

Yes NHC we should ALL stay away from this poison, and i just read that even the fermented types like natto, miso and tempeh are not all that great for you because they still contain hefty doses of Phytoestrogens  ......
That said i don't know why Doctor Mercola has approved Organic Soy Bean oil in his COQ10  formula, even if it's in small qty's, i'm sure he could have opted for another healthier oil  to compliment the formula........Have a read.....

I noticed the same thing about Dr Mercola's CoQ10 seg. I have been looking for one that I can take but all those that I have found so far in New Zealand contain substances that I have to avoid. I thought there should be a good chance that Dr Mercola's CoQ10 would be safe for me so I was very disappointed to find it contained soy, which is one of the foods that I react to.

Unfortunately reduced CoQ 10 is produced by a $5 billion dollar Japanese pharmaceutical house and they hold ALL the world patents on it. There simply is no way to change the soy in the product.

If I thoght there were ANY significant health risks then I wouldn't take two a day, would I?

Doc, all due respect, there are COQ10 products out there that are boasting 100% pure with absolutley no fillers......NOW brand is one of them...

 I personally would have liked to see the added Soya Bean Oil replaced with Pure Vit E and or rice bran oil ...You know we have all bashed Soy to no end right here and to get a product that says contains Soy or any other product we've kicked against, does not sell to well with many folks......And i'm just pointing out something i believe we can improve on, as other folks have indicated as well.......

Actually the reduced CoQ10 is produced by the Kaneka corporation in Japan, but the approved encapsulators (about 5 in the US) can use whatever oil they prefer.  Soybean oil is NOT mandatory in this product.

All I use any more is almond milk. I have never used much soy, it taste bad, but when I wanted to loose weight I went with Almond milk, it is only 40 calories an 8 oz glass and it taste good, works in cooking and baking, and is compairable in price to cows milk and soy.. We should be weened at our ages. Well I do still eat cheese. I just can not stay away from cow/goat cheese. and I buy whole milk yogert to mix with fresh ground flax for breakfast. Can not get raw milk or yogert here. I used to get raw milk when I milked the cows, the cats would line up and i would take truns squirting it in everyones mouth. Mine too. Then Mom told me it was not good for me until it was pastureised. I never was a big milk drinker anyway, too many days when the cows ate garlic, Yuck. I use Whey protein too. No one has any milk cows here any more, and I moved to the Subs.

I thought Lecithin was good for you. I take 4 capsules daily and attribute it to my HDL being 105.  Now I'm confused.  Dr. M once told me lecithin was good, but now his article implies it is not.  Can anyone clarify?

Dr. Emanuel Revici, M.D., (the subject of "The Doctor Who Cures Cancer") determined that soy produces a strong anabolic response to our metabolism.

Many of us are too anabolic. This imbalance can lead to a variety of problems including cancer.

Then of course there is the huge problem of boy's having delayed pubescence while girls risk early pubescence, due to soy baby formulas. This is a huge problem for those who suffer from it.

Im with ya Katie .. ive tried soy milk, chocolate and plain, soy pudding,   soy protien powder and soy nuts .. aside from the protien powder im just not fan of soy .. the powder i no longer take though

What about edamame or properly fermented tofu?  Those processed products you mentioned are possibly the worst forms of soy, especially the soy protein isolate most likely in the powder.  Some properly prepared, less processed forms don't seem to have much negative health impact.  Thoughts?

Not only does eating unfermented soy cause those health problems mentioned. Soy is also poor source of bioavailable protein, because of the trypsin inhibitors. Unpasteurized whey, eggs, and meat are better sources. For vegetarians, eating hemp, quinoa, peas, and beans(except for soy) in moderation would give you balanced amino acid profile.

I have MCS and one of the manifestations of the disorder is the development of intolerance to foods. Fortunately the foods I have become intolerant of are reasonably few but they do include gluten and soy. It does appear that the level of these two intolerances is fairly high in the population, therefore it annoys me that quite a number of gluten free products include soy.

The reason so many people have become "intolerant" of some foods is, that certain "ingredients" are being artificially processed, as well as being put into our foods in abnormally high quantities.  

Wheat gluten and soy are being added to almost every food, sometimes in more than one form; as a result, many are developing sensitivities and allergies.  It's a total overload of our systems!

Good thing I don't care for the stuff anyway! I also cannot eat much, it makes my belly ache, I get stabbing pains. Soy only has a very small place in my home, I do use Bragg's Amino Acids sparingly. Love it on my grass-fed beef burgers!

Well to tell you the truth, I have been taking soy for ages, my calcium is great, I am full of energey, I train on a regular base, and I am almost 64. I had bad asthma when I was taking dairy products. Since all that stuff is out ouf my life, I live!!

I think that there is good and bad in everything. We all know the bad sides of dairy products, specially the way the animals are raised and fed...I do feel that the dairy company are loosing ground and that they are going to war to save their ground and $$$

To me this sudden war on soya is rather strange. I do appreciate tons of articles from Dr. Mercola, but this war on soya leaves me with cold fet.

For a couple of years, I took care of a little girl that could only be fed through a feeding tube.  The formula she is given is soy-based and is the only thing she is given for nourishment besides water.  At age eight, she started developing!  For those that think soy is harmless, please take note!  This little girl is not eating hormone-ladened meat or anything else that could be the culprit; she is physically unable to do so.  

Don't misunderstand, I think that meat from animals that have been given growth hormones can and does contribute to the fact that girls are developing earlier and earlier in our society, but I know it wasn't the cause in this case.

As a side note, a comment I posted earlier may appear more than once.  Since my computer didn't seem to be responding, I clicked the submit button more than once.  Bert G., you're not alone!

While I do not eat soy as far as I know, I am acquainted with food allergies which cause the throat to constrict which started after 40 yrs and continued until recently and was only relieved by anti histamines.

I started taking 4g of vitamin C every day and they have reduced considerably.

I reacted badly with Cherries, apples, macadamias, carrots, nashi as well as less with other fruits and vegetables.

Now if I have any reaction at all I use EFT which as far as I am concerned is a miracle drug.

What can parents give children instead of soy milk if they have allergies/sensitivities to cow dairy and raw milk is not an option...we also are mindful of high-gycemic foods and would stay away from  almond/rice milk.  Any ideas?

Cathleen, why offer any form of milk at all? The only use I can see for it is in chowder, which can be taken off the menu, and cold cereal, a highly processed food that should be avoided anyway. In many cultures in earlier times, once children were weaned, they no longer got milk in any form.

Cathleen, my son's pediatrician told us that human beings seem to be the only living creature that is not weaned. Check the animal kingdom. My son does not drink milk at all. Calcium etc. can be found in foods etc.

I have been using UNsweetened almond milk, vanilla flavored and also the chocolate UNsweetened one as well. In my experience as a mom and former educator (35 years), there were very few children who didn't like chocolate! It's only 40 calories for 8 oz as was mentioned in one of the other posts.

Swami Barmi: Oh please. Red meat is the most nutritious source of food known to man??  It's even quoted as being said, "The report by the American Institute for Cancer Research and the World Cancer Research Fund says there is also convincing evidence linking consumption of alcohol, red meat and processed meat to elevated cancer risk."

Here is the problem as I see it. Long ago (caveman years if you like) man did consume red meat but not like we do today!! Do you think they were able to make a kill every single day? No. They ate primarily from plants and whatever they could of any type of meat (which wouldn't have been a lot). They didn't have refridgerators to store their food so it wasn't like they could eat off an animal they killed for a month. The animals today are boosted with hormones, drugs and other things we probably don't want to know. THIS IS THE MAIN PROBLEM! If you eat meat, at least go organic!

Actually there's a lot of evidence that humans seem to be hardwired for throwing things with accuracy. That would only make sense if there was a biological need, like hunting. Combine that with the fact that dogs have been sharing our campfires for almost as long as we had fire, means that we should have been just as good at hunting large game as a wolf pack.

The problem with modern meat eating is twofold. First is the way most cattle is raised on artificial diets and hormones. Second is that for some reason human preference on what cuts of meat have changed in the western world. Our ancestors always ate the organ meat, bone marrow, and the fat around the organs first. Muscle meat was usually dried or fermented for consumption during lean times.

Humans are opportunistic eaters though, and have found a lot of ways to turn the inedible into the edible. Fermenting being the number one way. The fact that we're ignoring the wisdom of our ancestors to make food cheaper to maximize profits is sad.

If anyone wants to be a frugivore/vegan, maybe reverse evolution is the answer? Epigenetics anyone? hee hee! Chimps/bonobos/gorillas have torso/gut systems much bigger than us and we have bigger brains in relation to body size in comparison to them (oh and btw these animals eat other animal based foods too)...find out what Payer's patches are in our own GIT and try to figure out why Vits A, B12, certain amino acids etc. need to be from animal sources to be bioavailable.

ps have had to treat vegans that went very "raw" in their dietary habits that took 10yrs or more to lose all their teeth (bone density too) and encounter other very serious health probs, and calcium isn't the only issue, several wanted to go back to things like meat but the digestion had become so debilitated that this was very difficult...i could go on :) take care please and listen to mum (assuming she isn't a radical vegan).

I can't eat soy or drink soy as it will make me hyper from the overactive thyroid disease that I have )Grave's Disease).  I don't have any problems with the fermented soy.  I had to stop taking a multivitamin which had soy in it as cover for the vitamin.  It made me hyper.

The vitamin probably had iodine in it, and that is what caused the hyper reaction. I have Grave's disease, too, and I drink organic soy milk to control it. It works to lower the thyroid production, not increase it.  Take the iodine out of your diet, use regular salt, not iodized salt, stop eating fish, and lower the amount of milk you drink.  There is iodine in a lot of foods, so watch how how much iodine you consume.

Several years ago I had a very negative experience with soy after reading a book which promoted the use of soymilk as a good protein.  As a female, it changed my cycle, I began to age, it exacerbated my constant struggle with a low red blood cell count, and I felt terrible! Someone fortunately showed me an article on the dangers of soy, and the industry behind it and I immediately stopped using the soy products and my health got back on track, with my cycle returning to normal.

Recently I began having some problems again with my cycle and realized that even the small amount of soy I was using as a substitute for dairy butter during a religious fast was too much! I stopped using it, and am back on track again. No soy for me! I also check my grain products like breads and pre-packaged "healthy" waffles and such so that my children don't get overloaded with soy.

I agree that you should always check labels.  When I started reading bread labels I was appalled.  I have even checked the labels of breads in the bakery area of stores, naively thinking that it would be like the old-fashioned bakeries.  I found that they contained just as many ingredients that I had no clue as to what they are.  Because of this, I have started making my own bread.  I make the dough in my bread machine, so it is very easy to make bread and now I know what's in it.  Almost all processed foods contain soy.

Also, where are the majority of the crops being created to grow this increase in soy demand? THE RAINFOREST, or what's left of it. They're cutting down thousands of acres a day of Amazon rainforest for cropland to grow soy for the world.

You are uninformed.  The people in Asian cultures eat FERMENTED soy, like Dr. M. was talking about.  It is very different from the forms of soy eaten in the West.  Furthermore, Asian cultures do not eat as much soy as the soy industry would lead us to believe.  Read The Whole Soy Story by Kaayla T. Daniel.  She has done the research and it is documented in this book.  

Re: Western people being healthier: no one claimed we are.  Many, many people in the West (the majority most likely) are eating lots and lots of UNFERMENTED soy without even being aware of it.  It is in many, many processed foods.

Which of the articles quoted in the piece above have been done with *organic* soya products? The answer is: Probably none.

So it's all about "modern", conventional, industrial soya. As I understand from www.SeedsOfDeception.com , the vast majority of the soya grown in this country is genetically altered. So what this piece above only shows is that consuming genetically tinkered soya is hazardous to your health, which of course it is!!!

It's the soy, period. The Chinese have grown soy for thousands of
years, but it's only relatively recently that they started eating it.
That's because they knew a few important facts about it: it was great
for nitrogen setting in the soil and it was also toxic to the human
body. For these reasons, they used it for crop rotation and  DID
NOT EAT IT. It was only when they discovered that it was safe to eat
after fermentation that they began using it as a CONDIMENT.



Soy's estrogenic and thyroid disruptive properties along with its
numerous other hazards have nothing whatsoever to do with whether or
not it is organic. In fact, the very processes necessary to make
unfermented soy "safe" to eat stretches the concept of organic imo.

If this is what happens when you consume large quantities of soy poison,(aggressive behavior, rude, limited 4 letter word...)Then on this alone we should not touch soy!

I have to say since I have taken Mercolas advice on many things like avoiding soy and now consuming raw milk, grass fed beef, avoiding processed foods my family and  I are much healthier. We just made the change about 9 months ago and with my last child who is now going to be three all his molars came in with no indiaction of pain. With my other two is was excruciating pain and like any conventional mother I would get the tylenol and teething gel, which I carried at all times! Now I do not even buy the stuff and wouldn't! I am thankful to Dr. Mercola and all of you who have given me sooo much great free information! God Bless Dr. Mercola and all of you!

Okay, here goes...

1. The overall risk vs benefits:  These studies fail to compare soy vs. meat.  That is the crux of the argument.  You must get protein from somewhere.  Soy is a far healthier source of protein than red meat. 

2. Heart Assoc  1)  Data in the study refers to soy supplementation, not soy foods.  2) Since when do you trust the American Heart Association... Who funded the study?   

3. Soy and Iron:  It's true, soy inhibits iron absorption.  So does green tea.  Iron deficiency is a tiny problem when compared to obesity, heart disease and a host of other problems caused by the protein source soy so often replaces, red meat. 

4. Calcium:  Soy does not cause the calcium leaching that the highly acidic digestion of red meat does.  So, while it may not be absorbed as well, it does not need to be absorbed in people who do not eat meat.  The bone degradation we see here in the west does not occur in Asian soy eaters. 

5. Soy Formula:  It should not exist.  Human milk is best.  The peanut allergy problems would go away if this product did not exist. 

6. Persistent Sexual Arousal:  This is my favorite!  I cannot believe you would even include it.  One woman who ate four pounds of soy foods daily suffered the problem.  Four pounds!  Hah!

I agree that the companies behind the soybean are not good. They do terrible things (soy formula) to get their products accepted into the marketplace.   Despite their evil ways, the soybean itself is not a bad thing. 

Look at the Chinese, Japanese and Southeast Asians who get their protein from soy and fish while avoiding red meat.  They are healthier and live far longer than we steak gobblers. 

Add a few small cubes of tofu to your salad tonight an  It'll do you some good.

Come to think of it.... I wouldn't take their cash even if it required just saying what I believe.  Because I do believe they are evil.  The chemical company, that is. 

My wife and I became vegan (with fish oil) several years ago and found soy to be a great substitute for meat.   At 40 I am back to racing triathlons at the same level I was at my peak 18 years ago.  This summer I came awfully close to placing in two races.... which, for me, is a dream come true.

FunRun, you say the soybean itself is not bad. Well.... the last time I accidently consumed soybeans (some years ago now), my throat and mouth began to itch and I became very dizzy. Now,  I avoid soy like it's plague. I wouldn't want to go into anaphylactic shock.

I have no beef against beef being healthy or not, but the alarming thing is the amount of resources (land, water, crops) used up to produce each pound. I forget the exact number but it is staggering. Not to mention the amount of methane gas produced by cows, contributing far, far more to greenhouse gases than humans do.

Look folks, it's not meat or soy that hurts you, it's the quality of those and the way they are processed. We are no longer eating anything fresh, unless we kill it and roast it on fire right then and there. We are no longer in control of the whole process of how food comes to your table. Its pasteurized, frozen, preserved, genetically modified, sprayed etc. In spite of all the factory Q control and labeling,ans organic certification, you don't really know what you eat.

So when we complain that this or that food is bad for us we don't really know what is that we are complaining about. Definitely, it's not the fresh, original, authentic food. And even if it is, it doesn't affect everyone the same way. For example, I can eat uncooked broccoli with no ill effect on me, but my wife has indigestion from it and has to steam it to be able to digest it.

We are both absolutely healthy, btw.

I've been drinking soy milk for many years, eated red meat and boiled eggs all my life, eaten lots of various raw and steamed vegetables all my life, and I've never went to a doctor except for a yearly check-ups. I even occasionally eat chocolate candies. I'm 47 and I feel like I'm 20 and people say I look 35.

I believe as long as you eat everything in moderation and exercise you are fine, unless you have some genetic disorder or developed food allergies. Then you really have to watch what you eat.
