Probiotics: Are they Real? Good vs. Bad bacterium Yes Virginia they are. What are probiotics? They are natural microorganisms that are essential to our health and well being. Most of use know the term antibiotic. This is the type of medicine that your doctor prescribes when you have an infection. This infection is caused by a microorganism such as a bacteria (the biotic). The medication used to destroy this organism is an antibiotic. While all of us understand the need to rid ourselves of bacteria that are harmful, we may not realize that there are many beneficial microorganisms. When you take an antibiotic it does not distinguish between a "good" bacterium and a "bad" bacterium, it simply interferes with all of them. Pharmacists and physicians will often counsel their patients to eat yogurt or take acidophilus capsules. Acidophilus along with bifodophillus are the two most common "good" or digestive microorganisms living in the human digestive tract. This probiotic therapy works well but acidophilus is heat sensitive and loses strength after the container has been opened. Many people do not like the taste and consistency of yogurt products.
Introducing FlorastorŪ Now there is an alternative, FlorastorŪ. This is a freeze-dried form of another microorganism, Saccharomyces boulardii. Another name for this organism is baker's yeast. Saccharomyces boulardii is commonly used to raise flour and brew beer. It is totally safe for human consumption. Florastor is a pharmaceutically pure form of S. boulardii. Florastor is stable at room temperature and has a long shelf life. In addition to being useful for antibiotic induced diarrhea Florastor can be used to relieve the symptoms of many common GI disturbances. Irritable Bowel Disease (IBD), Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), C.difficile infections, Crohn's disease and Ulcerative Colitis. Research has shown that saccharomyces boulardii is an effective, all natural product that will help return gastro intestinal flora to their healthy normal state. Florastor is a natural product that is almost pure saccharomyces boulardii. There are no known side effects expect for people who are allergic to yeast. There is only one drug interaction. Florastor cannot be taken with systemic anti-fungals, such as Mycostatin (nystatin), Diflucan (fluconazole), Nizoral (ketoconazole) or Sporonox (irtraconazole) all of these products in their oral form, neutralize Florastor. Florastor does not permanently colonize the digestive tract so your body does not get used to it. This is a great benefit and safety feature. A positive benefit
