Benjamin Percy’s “The Caves in Oregon”

And the new release of Writers Ask (#37) is ready to go now, too.

Here are a couple of snippets from it, giving two sides of the write-what-you-know issue.

Siobhan Dowd, has died of breast cancer at the age of 47 years.

For 61 issues Siobhan wrote our Silenced Writer articles. In her last years, she made time to write important and engaging novels for teenagers, including A Swift Pure Cry. Her work, her writing, and her kind presence in this world will be sorely missed.

A few questions for, and answers from, the editors:

R. Hallet asked a good question: I have never published anything and I am about to enter the new writers short story contest. What would happen if I submit my story, and before the winners are announced, I sell another story to a publication with a circulation of over 5000?

Don't worry. You can't control what happens after you submit your story, and if it's something wonderful like that, you can just be happy. It wouldn't disqualify you.

Someone else asked, just today: Is it okay if I submit the same piece to your competition and to the standard story category?

Although it’s fine to do that (just please mention it in the cover letter), we always consider competition submissions for the standard category as well.

A note on simultaneous submissions: A simultaneous submission means that you have the same story out to different publications at the same time. These are tough on editors. (Not so long ago, we fell in LOVE with a piece, couldn’t wait to let the author know we wanted to give it a home, but when we called him, he had to let us know the piece had just been published elsewhere. It was a sad day for him and for us.) But we do understand how tough it is for you to have your work tied up! We are organizing a plan now that will shorten the length of time people need to wait to find out the results of a competition. Details will follow next month!

Somehow it is September already—have a lovely one!

Looking forward,

Co-editors and sisters
