Why are natural progesterone patches not available?
There are technical difficulties in making small occlusive transdermal
patch
to achieve delivery of necessary amounts of natural (USP)
progesterone.
The amount of natural hormone is too great to be contained in a thin
layer
of medicated adhesive of a standard size patch - the patch would have
to
be uncomfortably large. Existing occlusive progesterone patches
actually
do not contain natural progesterone, which is bio-identical with the
human
hormone. They contain synthetic progestins, like
medroxyprogesterone.
Progestins are much more potent than natural progesterone, making it
possible
to include smaller amount of the substance in a small occlusive
transdermal
patch. However, there are substantial side effects associated
with
long-term use of progestins (medroxyprogesterone).
The adhesive in occlusive patch may cause an allergic reaction.
Persons with delicate skin can have another unpleasant experience: when
the patch is removed after a few days, its adhesive can peel off the
external layer of skin (epidermis) causing redness and oozing.
ClearPatch Progesterone USP lotion can be applied quickly
and
easily.
Once or twice a day application of the readily absorbing lotion makes
it as inconspicuous as a patch. The lotion is hypoallergenic,
doesn't cause any skin rashes.

Natural Progesterone USP contained in ClearPatch lotion does not pose
any side effect risks because it is identical with the human hormone.
