Q: Squelch level. Is this the level of squelch on the scanning channel (like channel 16)?

A: Squelch is basically for eliminating the noise, bigger squelch levels will have less noise, but less sensitivity too. 4 or 5 is usually a sufficient squelch level. However if you set the squelch level to the highest level, some of the weak signals will be blocked.

Q: CO/TO. Yes i understand Carrier and Time, but they do not sem to change the function. What really fo they change?

A: CO is scanning base on Carrier and TO is scanning based on Time. Based on Carrier, the radio will stop at the channel when there is a carrier. Based on Time, the radio will stop at a channel for a set time frame. When you set to CO , if there is no carrier at the moment then it won't stop at any particular channel. When you are checking the scanning function, you might set it to TO and I am sure if will stop at a channel which has voice traffic.

Q: Look Back. Is this for scanning? What does it do?

A: Yes, for scanning. Look-back is the time of delay before a “look-back” scan is made to sample the priority channel for activity.

Q: Dropout Delay? We changed it and did not find difference in functions.

A: Dropout Delay is the time until scan starts when it stops by signal input.

Q: Monitor. What is the function / purpose?

A: Monitor is related to the side button (the round one).
1. OFF-- No operation.
2. Monitor Momentary--Temporarily cuts off signaling. Works only when button is being held down.
3. Monitor Lock--Temporarily cuts off signaling. Switches each time button is pressed.
4. SQ OFF Momentary Squelch opens while button is held down. (White noise will come in and you can use it to adjust the audio volume level. Also bypass the CTCSS or DCS when you are pressing the button.)
5. SQ OFF Lock Squelch opens or closes. Switches each time button is pressed.

Q: The customer already has radios. Can these match them?

A: Our radios are available in both UHF (450-470 mhz) and VHF (150-174 mhz) bands, and easily matches up with every radio in these bands, from any maker. Blackbox even works with repeaters.

Q: Are they programmable, or come with set frequencies like FRS radios?

A: Yes, they are PC programmable. Our radios are professional, not FRS or GMRS.

Q: I’ve never heard of Blackbox. Who is the manufacturer?

Q: What do they compare with?

A: The specifications are comparible to the Vertex VX160.

Q: Is the programming of the radio difficult?

A: It is a simple, PC based program. Cables and software are very inexpensive.

Q: What about the FCC?

A: Since Blackbox is a professional radio, not an FRS, and is 4 watts of power, each user should have an FCC license for the frequencies used. The re-seller does not handle this, it is the sole responsibility of the end user. Simple forms are included with each radio shipment.

Q: Is Blackbox a trunking radio?

A: No. Blackbox is a conventional radio. Although they are able to be used with repeaters, they are not compatible with trunking repeaters. Trunking is one type of platform used to relay signal.

Q: Are they tough, like Motorola?

A: Blackbox radios are made to the highest standards. They are Military Spec tough, and include an aluminum frame. They have been tested and are in use in such environments as Racing, which causes a lot of vibration, noise, and dust.

Q: What is the warranty?

A: The warranty for Blackbox radios is one year, parts and labor. Warranty may include simple repairs, or a full replacement of the radio. Warranty covers only factory defects, not abuse. Don’t try to fix them yourself, as opening up the radio may cause the warranty to not be valid if you tear apart or break something.

Q: What about headsets, longer-life batteries, or other things?

A: The Blackbox line is complete, with earpieces, mics, headsets, optional high-capacity batteries, carry cases, 6-unit chargers, rapid chargers, etc.
